Javier Ferrin, Andres Monje win consolation titles

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - The University of North Florida men's tennis team opened its fall season at the Georgia Southern Invitational over the weekend and got strong performances from senior Eduardo Pereira and underclassmen Andres Monje and Javier Ferrin.

Pereira came into the tournament as the top overall singles seed and advanced to the A flight final before losing to No. 2 seed Davor Zink from College of Charleston, 3-6, 6-3, 6-4. Monje and Ferrin, meanwhile, both dropped their opening-round matches on Friday afternoon but rallied to win their respective consolation brackets on Sunday.

Ferrin won the A flight consolation with a 7-5, 3-6, 6-3 victory over Armstrong Atlantic's Robert Jendelund, while Monje knocked off South Carolina State's Jan Langer in the B flight consolation final. Monje upended the B flight No. 1 seed - Georgia Southern's Philip Prins - 7-5, 6-1 in his first consolation match on Saturday.

"We did well for this to be our first tournament of the year," UNF assistant coach Rodrigo Puebla said. "Our players have been improving their level day by day, and physically it seems we are getting close to where we need to be. We just have to keep working hard and use these fall tournaments to reach the high level that we will need for the spring."

The Ospreys do not return to fall action until Oct. 12-14, when the squad plays host to the UNF Fall Invitational and the UNF Tennis Complex.
