UNF outscores Hurricanes in second half
BOX SCORE
CORAL GABLES, Fla. - The University of North Florida men's basketball team played an inspired second half against 22nd-ranked Miami on Thursday night, outscoring the Hurricanes over the final 20 minutes, but cold first-half shooting put UNF into an early hole from which it couldn't recover in an 85-63 loss at the BankUnited Center.
UNF (1-9) had four players score in double figures, led by Tom Hammonds' 13 points, as the Ospreys fell behind by 46-23 at halftime. An 18-3 run by Miami (11- 0) blew the game open before the intermission. In the second half, however, UNF outscored Miami 40-39 and shot 52 percent from the floor to close the gap.
The Ospreys shot 41 percent for the game, while Miami shot 47 percent and hit 10-of-18 from 3-point range. Dwayne Collins recorded a double-double with 13 points and 11 rebounds to lead the Hurricanes.
"We came out after halftime, and our goal was to win the second half," UNF head coach Matt Kilcullen said. "For the most part, our guys battled. We had that one little stretch where the game got away from us (in the first half). Miami is good. They are very physical and put a lot of pressure on us. But our guys responded in the second half and really made some plays. We have a lot to build on from this game."
UNF's Chris Timberlake finished with 11 points, hitting eight of the Ospreys' first 15 points. During that stretch, he drained his first two 3-pointers to cruise past former Osprey Aaron Nichols and claim the UNF career record for 3-pointers made. Behind Timberlake's effort, UNF managed to stay close early -- trailing just 21-16 after 12 minutes.
From there, the wheels fell off for UNF. Miami (11-0) caught fire, hitting four 3-pointers to stretch its advantage to 39-19 over the next five minutes. The Ospreys never found a way to close the gap before the break.
Miami shot 52 percent over the first 20 minutes and hit seven 3-pointers en route to building its 23-point advantage at halftime. Brian Asbury scored nine points -- hitting three shots from beyond the arc -- for the Hurricanes in the first half. UNF shot just 30 percent in the first 20 minutes.
In the second half, UNF fell behind by 28 points but sliced into that margin late. The Ospreys fell to 0-3 all-time against Division I ranked opponents, also losing the Florida twice in the last two seasons.
Freshman DeVon Jones scored a season-high 12 points for the Ospreys, while Cortez Riley added 12 points off the bench.
The Ospreys will take five days off for Christmas break and return to practice on Dec. 26 in preparation for their final non-conference road swing at IPFW on Dec. 29 and Notre Dame on Dec. 31.
