Ospreys fall 82-59 in first game of Indiana swing
BOX SCORE
FORT WAYNE, Ind. -- The University of North Florida men's basketball team dug itself into another early hole with cold shooting and untimely turnovers when it squared off with Indiana Purdue-Fort Wayne on Saturday afternoon, leading to an 82-59 loss at IPFW's Gates Sports Center.
Junior walk-on Cortez Riley scored a career-high 18 points off the bench for UNF (1-10), but his efforts were lost on a day when the Ospreys went cold from 3- point range -- hitting just five of 28 shots from beyond the arc. UNF shot 46 percent overall in the second half but just 37 percent for the game. IPFW sealed the win at the free throw line, hitting 27-of-35 attempts, compared to just 8-of-11 for UNF.
IPFW (5-7) jumped out to an 18-3 lead in the first five minutes and never looked back. The Mastodons shot 43 percent for the game and hit 7-of-16 from 3-point range in racing out to a 40-19 advantage at halftime. They also forced 16 UNF turnovers, including 10 in the first half.
Center Jaraun Burrows scored 22 points to lead IPFW, while Ben Botts added 16 points.
"We had some great shots, but we couldn't get them to fall," UNF head coach Matt Kilcullen said. "We dug ourselves into a hole early, and then we started pressing a little trying to get back into the game. We missed some wide-open looks, and then we allowed that to affect what we did on the defensive end. That really allowed (Burrows) to take it to us.
"I don't fault the effort of our guys, because in the second half we did some really nice things. We just have to find a way to get things going offensively earlier in the game."
UNF trailed by 30 points late in the game but rallied over the final four minutes to slice into that deficit, outscoring the Mastodons 13-6 to finish the game.
Justin Cecil added 14 points for the Ospreys, while Tom Hammonds added 11 points. The game did mark the return to the floor of Stan Januska for UNF. The sophomore had missed the team's first 10 games with a broken foot suffered during the preseason. He finished with seven points but hit just 3-of-16 from the floor and only 1-of-9 from 3-point range. Senior center James Grimball tallied three blocked shots for the Ospreys, making him the school's career leader in that category -- moving past Gaius Jenkins for the all-time lead with 79 career swats.
UNF wraps up its two-game swing through Indiana on Monday at Notre Dame. Tipoff is set for 1 p.m. ET in South Bend. The game will be aired on WBOB-AM 1320.
