FORT MYERS, Fla. - North Florida Baseball opened its weekend road series with a win over FGCU, 5-3, in Game 1 at Swanson Stadium on Friday.
Friday marked the largest crowd at Swanson Stadium to ever watch a game between North Florida and FGCU. It was the second-largest crowd at Swanson Stadium this season.
Redshirt sophomore outfielder Carter White led the way at the dish for the Ospreys. White went 1-2 with three RBI, one home run and two walks. It marked White's ninth home run this season. He improved his team-high RBI total to 39.
Redshirt junior utility player Boone Hosey improved his on-base streak to 28 games with a walk.
Redshirt junior left-handed pitcher Dakota Stone delivered a solid start on the mound for North Florida.
Stone dealt 7.0 innings and notched seven strikeouts while allowing just four hits, three runs, two earned runs and one walk. It marked Stone's eighth appearance this season with seven strikeouts or more. Stone threw 109 total pitches and 77 total strikes.
Junior infielder Gialdri Gomez roped a leadoff double in the right-center field gap in the top of the fifth inning. One at bat later, White opened the scoring with a two-run home run to right field to give the Ospreys a 2-0 lead.
Junior infielder Mitchell Collins roped an RBI single to left field to cap off North Florida's three-run fifth inning. Collins finished with North Florida's only multi-hit performance with a 2-5 outing, one RBI and one run. It marked Collins' 13th mulit-hit game this season.
Trailing 3-0, FGCU responded with one run in the bottom of the sixth frame.
White tallied his third RBI of the game in the top of the eighth inning with a bases-loaded walk that put North Florida ahead, 4-1. Redshirt freshman outfielder Sean Benjamin plated UNF's second run of the fifth inning with a sacrifice fly to extend the Ospreys' advantage to 5-1.
Down to its final six outs, FGCU plated two runs in the bottom of the eighth frame, though it wasn't enough to overcome the eventual final margin.
