LOUISVILLE, Ky. – North Florida Track and Field earned the gold medal in the Women's Distance Medley Relay (DMR) with a time of 11:46.87 in the first day at the ASUN Indoor Championships on Friday.Â
Â
The Men's DMR added a second-place podium finish with a silver-medal time of 9:47.91.Â
Â
North Florida sits in third-place on the women's side with 29 points, while the men are in sixth with 18 points.Â
Â
It marked the second-straight year that North Florida has medaled in the Men's and Women's DMR. The women have claimed the DMR title at the ASUN Indoor Championship in the consecutive seasons for the first time since 2016.Â
Â
North Florida surpassed a pair of program record times in the preliminary rounds of the track events. Avaunt Ortiz surpassed the his previous program-best mark in the Men's 400m with a time of 47.59 to move on to tomorrow's finals.Â
Â
The second program record fell when junior sprinter Rey Hernandez won his heat and reset his program-record time in Men's 60m with a time of 6.78 to advance.Â
Â
"The women competed very hard all day long," Director of Cross Country/Track and Field Jeff Pigg said. "They took advantage of every opportunity and made the most of it. The DMR backed up last year's title with another outstanding performance. All of them were running their second race of the day and they really layed it on the line. Nataly Walters and Rylie Jackson did a great job in the long jump by scoring the most points ever for our program in that event. Maddie ran a very tough 5000m with a strong fifth-place finish and a huge personal best, while Laci Watford capped off her indoor 5000m with a personal best and first scoring position."
Â
"In the mile the women did a great job executing their race plan to advance all three to the final, while the men did a nice job getting thee through to the final as well. Aidan Arnold looked especially strong with Christian Ruocco and Andrew Mahorner running well. Our women's pole vaulters competed well and cleared scoring bars. Camryn Batt ran a personal best in the women's 60m hurdles. Rey Hernandez ran a clean 60m hurdles to get off to a strong start."
Â
"Gabby Johnson ran a nice 400m and matched her indoor personal-best to set up for a strong final tomorrow. Ivory Edgecomb made the finals in the 60m and 200m with a personal-best in the 200m."
Â
"The men competed very well in the DMR, the group fought hard and I'm thrilled with their effort. Ever is tired at the end of the first day and they stepped up. Rey Hernandez had an amazing day. He is really in the zone now and is set up to have another great one tomorrow. Cole Perry ran a gutsy 5000m to score and run a lifetime best. It's great to see the hard work paying off."
Â
"Both teams are in a prime spot to have the best ASUN Championship finish ever." Pigg added.Â
