
McGill Tallies 27 Points, Women's Basketball Falls To Central Arkansas

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – North Florida Women's Basketball fell against Central Arkansas, 79-72, inside UNF Arena on Saturday.
Freshman forward Dezuray McGill turned in an ASUN-Conference high 27 points on 12-for-22 from the field and 2-for-5 from three, in addition to seven rebounds and two steals in 30 minutes. It marked McGill's second game this season scoring 20+ points and seventh game with 10+.
McGill was sensational to start the contest, scoring the first 13 points for North Florida on 5-for-7 shooting from the field and 2-for-2 from beyond the arc to give UNF a 13-8 lead at the 6:30 mark of the first quarter. McGill surpassed her season average of 9.6 points per game in the opening three-plus minutes of action.Â
Central Arkansas fought back to take a 16-15 advantage midway through the first quarter, though sophomore guard Jamisyn Stinson answered with a go-ahead three from the top of the key to help UNF regain a two-point edge.Â
After the initial 10 minutes of action, Central Arkansas commanded a 23-18 advantage. The Ospreys forced three turnovers by UCA in a first quarter that featured two ties and four lead changes.
Central Arkansas built momentum in the second quarter and took a 43-30 lead into halftime. Stinson buried her second three-pointer of the game with 3:11 remaining before the break.
In the first half of play, McGill posted a team-high 15 points on 6-for-12 from the field and 2-for-5 from deep, in addition to four rebounds in 15 minutes of action.
Back-to-back layups by McGill in the early stages of the third quarter saw North Florida trail by just eight at the 6:38 mark of the period. On the last possession of the third quarter, Stinson buried a buzzer-beating three to cut North Florida's deficit to 55-47.Â
In the third quarter, the Ospreys out-scored Central Arkansas 17-12, forced six turnovers and shot a perfect 4-for-4 from the charity stripe.
North Florida narrowly trailed UCA, 56-51, in the initial two minutes of the fourth quarter following a put-back layup by McGill.
An 8-3 run that featured a layup by McGill and Stinson's fourth three-pointer of the game cut North Florida's deficit to 66-60 with 3:58 remaining in regulation. However, that was as close as the margin would get before the score went final.
Stinson added 16 points on 5-for-9 shooting from three, in addition to five assists and five rebounds in 38 minutes.
Redshirt sophomore guard Alexa Washington rounded out North Florida's double-digit scorers with 10 points on 8-for-10 from the free throw line, in addition to five assists, three rebounds and four steals. Washington has now scored at least 10 points in four of UNF's six ASUN Conference games.Â
Overall, North Florida led Central Arkansas in offensive rebounds, 13-8, steals, 11-1, second-chance points, 11-7 and paint points, 34-28. North Florida forced UCA into 18 turnovers and committed just six.
North Florida travels to Louisville, Ky., to play Bellarmine at Knights Hall on Thursday, Jan. 22. Tipoff is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. ET on ESPN+.
