Ospreys Best Bulls Behind Hit Barrage, 13-10

North Florida Unloads for 20 Hits, Most Since March 2019

TAMPA, Fla. - Just over a month ago, North Florida baseball defeated USF in Jacksonville, 2-1, in a pitcher's duel. Tuesday in Tampa the Ospreys defeated the Bulls once again, this time by the way of 13 runs on a season-high 20 hits in a 13-10 victory against South Florida (18-11) April 5.

North Florida scored three runs in the first to take a lead it never relinquished despite multiple crooked-number innings from a strong-hitting USF team.

UNF's 20 hits is its most since March 24, 2019 when the Ospreys downed FGCU, 14-6 at Harmon Stadium. Absolutely wild numbers marked the final line score as the two teams combined for 23 runs and 32 hits all the while stranding 23 runners.

The only inning that didn't see a run scored was a scoreless second frame as the Ospreys plated at least one run in six separate innings and the Bulls in five.

All told, North Florida (11-19) laced nine extra-base hits including six doubles, one triple and two home runs. It's the most extra-base hits for the UNF bats in a single game since posting nine on seven doubles and two long balls against Northeastern Feb. 25, 2017.

With the win, North Florida has won five-straight games against USF, improving to 13-10 all-time against the Bulls and 5-2 during head coach Tim Parenton's tenure.

Both Cade Westbrook and Abraham Sequera tallied their second four-hit game of the year, Drew Leinenbach posted a season-best three RBI and Dallen Leach drove in three as well on three hits.

Westbrook extended his on-base streak to 17 games as UNF neared 300 hits as a team through 30 games with 297.

Jason Gonzalez earned his team-best third win on the year and Stephen Halstead tallied his fourth save of the season.

Behind the Line Score
  • North Florida batted around in the first, going up 3-0. Aidan Sweatt catalyzed the scoring, singling up the middle before swiping two bags. Sequera drove him in with an RBI groundout. The two-out rally started as UNF scored two with two outs. Westbrook singled, stole second, Caleb Stafford was hit by a pitch and Trey Spratling-Williams walked. Dallen Leach singled home Westbrook and Drew Leinenbach drove in another with a free pass.
  • USF's Carmine Lane doubled to open the first and eventually scored to get USF one run in the first.
  • The Bulls got one more, cutting their deficit to 3-2 in the third thanks to a two-out RBI from Nelson Rivera. Jason Gonzalez standed the bags loaded, working a pop out to Aidan Sweatt.
  • USF lefty Joseph Sanchez had been sailing along until he was met by back-to-back home runs from Aidan Sweatt and Brock Edge in the fourth.
  • UNF expanded its lead to 6-2 in the fifth. Spratling-Williams doubled, moved to third on a sac fly and scored on Leach's sac fly.
  • USF's Drew Brutcher hit a two-run home run to left, bringing USF's deficit to 6-4 in the sixth.
  • Tyler Gerteisen crashed into the centerfield wall just a batter later, robbing USF's Ben Rozenblum for the second time on the night in such a fashion.
  • Just when USF got back in the game, North Florida expanded its lead again, scoring five runs in the seventh inning. UNF used seven hits in the frame, getting four extra-base hits including Spratling-Williams' first-career triple.
  • The wild contest continued in the bottom half of the inning, with USF scoring five to cut the UNF lead to 11-9. Lane provided the biggest hit, a three-run double.
  • Leinenbach drove an important insurance run with a single to left in the eighth, scoring pinch runner Justin Holmes.
  • USF's three singles in the eighth made it 12-10 Ospreys. Stephen Halstead got a key strikeout to strand two Bulls and keep USF from turning the order around.
  • North Florida added another in the ninth as Sequera doubled and scored on a pair of wild pitches.
  • Halstead turned in a one-two-three ninth to finish it.
