Highly Lauded Forward Named ASUN Co-Defensive Player of the Year, First Team All-ASUN and All-Academic Pick
ATLANTA - The star-studded career docket for UNF women's basketball's Jazz Bond had another chapter added today as the forward was named ASUN Co-Defensive Player of the Year while also earning a spot on the All-ASUN First Team and ASUN All-Academic squad.
Jazz Bond's 2021-22 All-ASUN Honors
After earning ASUN Defensive Player of the Year honors last season, Bond is the first Osprey in UNF women's basketball history to earn a pair of ASUN Defensive Player of the Year laurels. She also earns the spectacular distinction of being just one of two student-athletes to earn the award twice in their career since the conference began issuing the award in 2005. FGCU's Tytionia Adderly is the only other ASUN women's basketball student-athlete to have achieved the feat.Â
"Jazz has always found a way to consistently make plays for us on both ends of the floor," head coach Darrick Gibbs said. "That is a testament to all of the work she puts in and how committed she has been to her teammates. It's great to see her recognized by making the first team and earning ASUN Defensive Player of the Year honors."
Bond is a four-time all-conference pick and a two-time first team selection after being tabbed to the top squad last season. She is also a two-time ASUN All-Academic Team honoree, touting a 3.57 GPA in her master's of public health degree. To boot, she also received CoSIDA First Team Academic All-District honors this past February, becoming the first Osprey to do so in the program's Division I history.Â
"I'm really happy for Jazz. It's great to see her get recognized for her consistent hard work in the classroom," Gibbs said. "She is what being a student athlete is all about!"Â
The 6-4 forward lived up to the predictions of the league, claiming the top defensive honor in the conference after being selected as the ASUN Preseason Defensive Player of the Year at the start of the 2020-21 and 2021-22 seasons.Â
Bond has dominated the ASUN weekly award listings throughout her four years at North Florida. On seven different occasions and three times this season she has been named ASUN Player of the Week. During her first season at North Florida in the 2018-19 campaign, Bond was named ASUN Newcomer of the Week on four instances. She picked up that honor in just her first week of competition at North Florida after transferring in from South Florida.Â
The North Florida record book is riddled with Bond's name. She is the program's career leader in blocks (268) and touts the Division-I era record for rebounds (799) and free throws made (277).Â
This season Bond has posted eight double-doubles and is averaging 15.4 points per game, 7.9 rebounds per contest and 2.4 blocks per game. The forward is also a threat from beyond the arc, having made 54 three-pointers, shooting 38 percent from long range.Â
Bond paces the league in blocks, blocks per game and points per game. She ranks 15th in the nation in total blocks, 17th in blocks per game and 64th in three-point field goal percentage, a testament to her ability to do just about everything on the floor.Â
With 1,563 points, Bond is just nine points shy of setting the UNF DI-era record for career points. UNF Hall of Famer Brittany Kirkland is currently at the top with 1,571 points.Â
Bond and the Ospreys take on ASUN West Division fourth-seeded Lipscomb in the ASUN First Round in Nashville tonight at 8 p.m. EST.
