Beach Volleyball Splits Opening Day Doubleheader

Doug Wright Earns Win Number One as Head Coach
TALLAHASSEE, Fla. - North Florida beach volleyball got the 2022 season going by splitting a twin bill at the FSU Beach Courts Saturday, Feb. 26. UNF (1-1) dropped its season opener against No. 8 Cal Poly (1-0) before coming up with some clutch points to defeat Tampa (1-1) in match number two.
Head coach Doug Wright earned his first win as head coach with the victory against Tampa. Callie Workman picked up win number 57 for her career, moving her past Cam McGuire and Julie Trembley for fifth all-time in wins for the program's history.
North Florida saw two Ospreys make their UNF debuts in the starting five as Madeline Camp and Hayden Wooldridge saw time. Zoe Cahill and Mariana Feliciano Sanchez also played at the extra slot.
Match 1: #8 Cal Poly 4, UNF 1
North Florida (0-1) had the tough task of taking on No. 8 Cal Poly (1-0) in the first match of the season. The Mustangs got a 2-0 lead with straight-sets wins at the fifth and third pairs.Â
Lauren Galinis and Carleigh Semeniuk made it eight-straight wins as a pair dating back to April 18 of last year, getting UNF on the board with a 21-15, 21-13 win at the second slot.Â
Cal Poly would clinch the match at the first slot. Taryn Griffey and Callie Workman nearly won a huge second set to even up the match before falling 23-21 in the second frame.
Hayden Wooldridge and Chantel McMillan were paired up at the fourth position in their first match together. After dropping the first set, the duo won the second, 24-22, pushing things to a third frame. Wooldridge and McMillan came up just short, falling 16-14 in the deciding frame.Â
Newcomers Zoe Cahill and Mariana Feliciano-Sanchez played at the extras slot and had a good showing, winning 21-18, 22-20.

Tampa won at court three to earn its only point of the match before North Florida came back to post four unanswered wins.Â
McMillan and Wooldridge earned their first win as a duo to even things up, taking the fourth court, 21-14, 21-17.Â
Gabby O'Connell, in her first official competition since 2017, teamed up with freshman Madeline Camp to win 21-16, 21-18, getting UNF in front for good.Â
Nothing came easy from there on out, but UNF emerged on the better end of the results in the remaining courts. After dropping the first set, Semeniuk and Galinis won 21-11 and 18-16, putting the match in UNF's hands.Â
Griffey and Workman showed a flair for the dramatic, winning an unbelievable marathon first set, 32-30, before claiming the next frame in traditional fashion, 21-18.
Julianna Askew and Anna Mallory also earned a win at the extras position.
