North Florida Remains Unbeaten in Home Openers in DI Era
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - North Florida men's tennis grabbed the momentum with a doubles win and all six singles slots took care of business as the Ospreys (1-2) swept Charleston (0-2) in the home opener on a crisp Sunday afternoon from the UNF Tennis Complex.
How it Happened
PJ Kotan and Rodrigo Crespo were on a mission, winning 6-0 at the third doubles position to put UNF in front just minutes into the match. Slots one and two were tight, but UNF had the edge. Jonas Hartenstein and Jorge Nunez navigated down a 40-0 position to take their sixth set in a 6-4 defeat of Charleston's Robby Krick and Zach Larke.
Nunez and Matt Carroll won back-to-back, combining to take 24 of 26 sets played between the two. With UNF up 3-0 and a team win in sight, Charleston put up some resistance at the remaining courts.
Hartenstein won 6-4 in the opening set and possessed a 5-2 lead in the second frame before Larke got within a set. It was PJ Kotan that clinched it for the Ospreys, doing so in three sets thanks to a vicious response after dropping the opening frame. Kotan won 3-6, 6-0, 6-1 just before Hartenstein claimed a victory, 6-4, 6-4.
Nilo Duarte got gritty and pulled off his own three-set win. Down a frame, Duarte won a tiebreaker, 7-4, forcing a 10-point tiebreaker that he took, 10-7.
Not lost on the action was Bruno Vietri, who clawed back into the match after dropping the first set of his Division I career, 2-6. Vietri turned the corner and got a lift from the team and strong home crowd, winning the final two sets 6-2, 6-1.
