Ospreys Play Friday, Saturday in Home-Opening Weekend
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - UNF men's tennis hosts Flagler Friday and Troy Saturday in its home-opening weekend.
1. Last Time Out
STATESBORO, Ga. - Down a doubles point, UNF men's tennis (1-1) rallied to win four of six singles to defeat Georgia Southern (0-1) at the Wallis Tennis Center Saturday, January 30.
2. New Faces
UNF newcomers include Rodrigo Crespo, Jonas Hartenstein and Breno Marques. Crespo went 20-10 with Western Michigan in singles play a year ago, while Hartenstein picked up time with Mississippi State. True freshman and Brazil native Breno Marques won't compete this season for the Ospreys. Crespo picked up his first singles win as an Osprey Saturday at Georgia Southern.
3. Ranking Recognition
Dominik Barton and Matt Caroll came in at No. 56 in the ITA Preseason Doubles rankings. The duo was the only ASUN pair to be ranked in the Division I poll. They've appeared twice at the top doubles slot this season.
4. In Home Openers
UNF is a perfect 3-0 in home openers under head coach Matt Lucas. The Ospreys topped Troy, 6-1, in 2018, and Mercer by the same score the next year. Last season UNF edged Georgia Southern, 4-3, in the home opener.
5. Scouting Report
Flagler: Flagler is making its season opener … the Saints did play in fall tennis, having student-athletes compete at the ITA Regional Tournament in Belmont, N.C. and two UTR Tournaments in Jacksonville during October … The Saints are coached by Thomas Hipp who enters his seventh season … he is 81-74 at Flagler … FC went 7-5 last season and 16-8 in 2019, reaching the opening round of the NCAA DII Southeast Regional.
Troy: The Trojans are 5-0 and 1-0 against Division I opponents … Troy opened the year with a 4-3 win against Samford and a pair of wins against Auburn University Montgomery and Point University respectively … In Troy's last full season it went 17-8 but just 1-7 in the Sun Belt before falling in the opening round of the league tournament … The Trojan roster features one senior, six juniors, one sophomore and six freshmen.
HOME MATCH COVID PROTOCOL
This season, due to UNF, ASUN and NCAA Covid-19 protocol, all spectators will be required to view tennis matches from outside the perimeter fencing at the UNF Tennis Complex.
Sightlines will be limited by the windscreen that will remain in place on all fencing. All areas within the perimeter fencing including the areas between courts 1 and 2 as well as the tennis complex restrooms will be closed to spectators and maintained as a team only area due to social distancing requirements. Spectators will be able to access restrooms at Hodges Stadium during all tennis matches. Admission to all matches is free and masks are required while on the UNF Campus.
