DeLAND, Fla. - Less than an hour prior to the first pitch between North Florida (32-25) and Liberty (39-19) in the ASUN Championship Loser's Bracket Semifinal game Friday, May 24, Jacksonville and Stetson completed a 16-inning affair.
Playing suit to the extra-inning mayhem of the tournament, UNF and Liberty had its own extra-inning battle, playing into the 12th inning. But when it was all said and done, second-seed Liberty walked off on the five-seeded Ospreys via a sac fly.
A Year in Review
UNF went 32-25 and 12-11 in ASUN play a year ago, finishing fifth in the conference. The Ospreys picked up three wins against Power Five opponents, including a season-opening series win against Missouri Feb. 15-17.
The Ospreys had a number of players turn out big play in 2019. Seven times UNF picked up ASUN weekly honors and two players earned ASUN superlative awards. Righty Brad Deppermann became the first player in program history to be named ASUN Pitcher of the Year, while junior outfielder Tanner Murphy was tabbed ASUN Scholar Athlete of the Year.
Murphy and Deppermann both landed on the first team while second baseman Jay Prather was also tabbed to the first team. Senior righty Nick Marchese had a breakout year, going 7-0 en route to ASUN Second Team All-Conference honors. Designated hitter David Maberry hit a team-high .327 and picked up ASUN Second Team All-Conference recognition.
Deppermann would be drafted in the seventh round of the 2019 MLB June Draft and Murphy was picked up by the New York Mets in the 18th round. Marchese earned a free agent deal with the Arizona Diamondbacks.
New Faces
The 2020 roster features 16 returning letterwinners and 14 newcomers. UNF has eight pitchers returning from a year ago, while it lost arms in Brad Deppermann, Trace Norkus, Nick Marchese and Ethan Michaelis. UNF's offense sees five returning letterwinners.
The Ospreys have a combined eight players that have transferred in from a junior college or a four-year institution. Two-way player Austin Bogart comes to UNF after three years with the Stetson Hatters.Â
All told, there are 32 players on UNF's 2020 roster.Â
