
Women's Tennis Readies for South Carolina in NCAA First Round

COLUMBIA, S.C. - North Florida women's tennis prepares to make its fifth straight appearance in the NCAA Tournament as it faces the fourth overall seed in South Carolina Friday at 2 p.m. at the Carolina Tennis center.
No. 21-ranked Virginia (17-8, 8-6 ACC) and Old Dominion (19-4) face off in the first round at 11 a.m. as well.
North Florida and the Gamecocks met in the first round of the 2017 NCAA Championships with Carolina coming out on top, 4-0, in Columbia, S.C.Â
TEAM NOTES
- North Florida finished the season 17-7 and went 6-1 in ASUN play to earn a share of the regular season championship and the No. 2 seed in the tournament. The Ospreys are searching for their first win in NCAA play.
- Senior Rafaela Gomez earned ASUN Tournament MVP honors as she clinched the match for UNF against FGCU to secure the Ospreys' fifth straight championship.
- Gomez is currently 10-8 on the season in dual matches in the No. 1 and No. 2 spots.
- Valentina Mariotto enters the match having won five straight contests including clinching the ASUN Semifinal against Lipscomb.Â
- In doubles, Mariotto and Ana Paula Melilo have picked up nine consecutive wins and are now 12-7 on the year.
- Lucia Montano and Florencia Rossi have also been successful at the No. 3 spot together as the pair owns a 14-4 mark and have won three straight.
- Gomez and Constanza Gorches have paired up at the top spot for a 16-5 mark to help the Ospreys win the doubles point in all but one ASUN match.
ABOUT SOUTH CAROLINA
- The Gamecocks (20-3, 12-1 SEC), currently No. 3 in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association's (ITA) rankings, are the No. 4 seed in the tournament. They come behind No. 1 Georgia, No. 2 North Carolina and No. 3 Stanford.
- South Carolina has advanced to the Round of 16 the past two years after taking both matches at home in the First and Second Rounds.
- Ingrid Martins, Paige Cline and Mia Horvit were selected to compete in the 2019 NCAA Division I Women's Tennis Championships as individuals.
- In singles, Martins set a program record by coming in at No. 4 in the ITA rankings and has stayed there for more than three weeks. Paired up in doubles, Horvit and Martins achieved another program-high, topping the poll at the No. 1.
- Martins owns a 14-2 dual-match record at the No. 1 position and is 12-2 against nationally-ranked opponents. Most recently, she downed the nation's No. 1-ranked player in her team's defeat of No. 1 Georgia for Carolina's first SEC Championship in program history.
- Competing at the No. 2 spot for South Carolina, Cline is 12-4 in duals and 7-3 when facing ranked opponents.
- In doubles, Horvit and Martins play at the top spot in the lineup with a 13-4 record in duals and 23-6 overall.
