CORAL GABLES, Fla. - It was a short day for North Florida women's tennis as just one Osprey competed in the final day of the Bedford Cup with Constanza Gorches playing in the consolation semifinals.
Gorches, who is new to the ASUN, faced off with FGCU's Julia Ascua. Ascua got the upperhand quick and took the first set 6-2, before staying out in front to sweep the second, 6-0.Â
To reach the semifinals, Gorches defeated M. Rakotondrazafy (Florida A&M) 6-1, 6-0 in the consolation first round. She then took down Jacara Gillis (Florida Atlantic) in a tight 6-4, 7-6 (7-4) victory to advance to the quarterfinals on Saturday. She closed out Saturday with a 6-3 ,6-4 win against Haleigh Porter (Florida A&M) to be the lone North Florida player to reach the semifinals.Â
COBRA'S CORNER
"This past weekend showed us how good our tennis can be when we stay committed to being disciplined and controlling our intensity, body language, energy and attitude. The ones who did this in the toughest draw had a great tournament. As with every fall competition, we cherish the positives and take the not-so-positives as lessons to be learned and get better. We are looking forward now to taking a few girls to ITA regionals this coming week."
North Florida now looks ahead to the ITA Southeast Regionals beginning on October 18 at Georgia Tech.
