Muscheites, Kecic Grab Doubles Wins

GAINESVILLE, Fla. - It was a successful day in doubles for No. 23 Lasse Muscheites and Jefta Kecic as the pair picked up two wins at the Gator Ranked 1 Tournament at the University of Florida on Saturday.
"Today was a prime example of what it means to compete and what we want the foundation of our program to be about," said head coach Matt Lucas. "I couldn't be more proud of the effort today from Lasse and Jefta and the determination they showed."
The duo opened the day with a convincing 8-3 win against Illinois in the consolation Orange Doubles bracket. Kecic and Muscheites then went on to take on the No. 56 pair from Tulane in Constantin Schmitz and Ewan Moore and took home as they battled to a tiebreak win, 8-7 (8) to grab the consolation title.
"We jumped on Illinois early and kind of ran away with that match. The exact opposite happened in the match against Tulane," added Lucas. "Our guys found themselves down the breaks to a highly-ranked team, but they never waivered from who they are. They kept believing, fighting and competing for every point. Their energy was great and it allowed them to get back into the match. Saving four match points in the tiebreaker and continuing to play fearless aggressive doubles is what we want to be known for. To get that win was all about heart and a refusal to lose."
North Florida did not fare that well in singles action as No. 62 Trey Yates (Kentucky) defeated No. 71 Kecic in three sets. Muscheites advanced in his bracket on a walkover against Ketucky's Enzo Wallart.
"Jefta carried that same mentality into his singles match yet just fell a bit short in the end," said Lucas. "I tell the guys all of the time that the effort and competitive spirit doesn't guarantee a win, but it for sure provides us the best chances to be successful. We have two more chances tomorrow to see if we can duplicate this effort and continue to try to build and make this the standard day in and day out."
On the final day of action, Kecic faces Nico Rouanet (Louisville) at 9 a.m., while Muscheites takes on Florida's Chase Perez-Blanco around 10:30 a.m.
