The Short Story:Â In the ASUN Conference opener for the North Florida baseball team, a pair of homeruns by Kennesaw State proved to be the difference in an 8-3 loss on Friday night at Harmon Stadium.Â
LEADING OFFÂ
- The game was tightly contested through the first six innings as the two starting pitchers worked around some scoring opportunities.
- Senior Patrick Ervin was the Ospreys offensive leader on the night going 3-for-4 at the plate with an RBI and a run scored
- Fellow senior Alex Merritt also tallied multiple hits with a 2-for-4 performance, extending his current hit streak to a team-leading 7
- Chris Berry and Chris Thibideau both extended their current on-base streaks to 17 games
- The Ospreys left 10 runners on base and had at least two runners on base in each of the first five frames
- Kennesaw State, the ASUN leaders in homers, lived up to their billing as 5 of their first 6 points came courtesy of a pair of homeruns
- KSU totalled 15 hits on the night
- The loss was just the second series opening loss of the season for UNF this year
HOW IT HAPPENEDÂ
- North Florida was inches away from getting on the board in the first inning as Yahir Gurrola singled and moved to third on a single by Chris Thibideau. With two outs, Blake Voyles belted a ball deep to right field that was caught by KSU's Terence Norman with his back up against the fence.
- In the second, UNF had runners on second and third with one out but Owl starter Tony Dibrell set down the next two batters to keep the Ospreys off the board.
- Kennesaw State got on the board in the fourth inning when Forrest Bramlett hit a two-run homer.
- UNF responded with a run in the bottom of the fourth. Wesley Weeks doubled and then scored on an RBI single by Patrick Ervin.
- In the fifth, the Ospreys tied the scored with another run. Gurrola led off with a walk and stole second. After Dibrell notched a pair of strikeouts, Alex Merritt slashed an RBI single allowing Gurrola to score.
- KSU pushed back in front in the sixth by manufacturing a run. Bramlett doubled and moved to third on a sacrifice bunt by Norman. Chris Erwin followed with a single that plated the third Owl run
- Again UNF answered with a run in the bottom of the frame to even the score. After a warning track shot by Weeks, Ervin singled for his third hit of the game and moved up a base on a wild pitch. Mac Wilson then laced a single through the right side allowing Ervin to come around and score. Back-to-back walks by Gurrola and Chris Berry loaded the bases before Norman made a highlight sliding catch on a sinking fly ball from Thibideau that ended the inning.
- A leadoff walk in the seventh ended UNF starter Austin Drury's night. Griffin Helms greeted Osprey reliever Anthony Delaney by hitting a single, but Delaney responded by getting the next two batters out. Norman would deliver the game deciding blow by hitting his first career homerun over the centerfield fence pushing the KSU lead to 6-3.
- Kennesaw State added a pair of insurance runs in the 9th, getting a run-scoring double from Erwin.
- Owl reliever Gabe Friese set down 10 consecutive Osprey hitters over the final three innings to secure the victory.
