JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - North Florida beach volleyball swept Jacksonville, 4-1, and 5-0, to clinch a share of the Atlantic Sun regular season title after posting a 7-1 mark in conference play on Wednesday afternoon at Dolphin Beach.
"I am very proud of the focus and intensity we played with at the beginning of each match. I thought we came out and set the tone for the rest of day," said head coach Steve Loeswick. "Our fours and fives did a great job of getting those early points that allowed us to have the momentum going into the second half of each dual."
Both duals saw the teams face off with the same pairs each time with the exception of the exhibition match. In the exhibition match in dual one, Emily Davanzo and Shannon McPherson picked up a 21-19, 21-18 victory. In the second dual, McPherson paired with freshman Nicole DeBolt for a 21-18, 19-21, 15-11 victory.
The No. 4 and No. 5 courts were perfect for the day and set UNF up needing to win just one upper court. At the No. 4 spot, Chaney Howard and Ambre Desaulnay knocked off Olga Nustayeva and Shelby Babowicz, 21-16, 21-16 and 21-12, 21-12. Howard and Desaulnay now own a team-best 16-1 mark on the season.
In the first dual, Carina Hoff and Brittany Pase paired up for a 21-19, 21-17 victory and followed up with a three-set thriller in the second 21-18, 15-21, 18-16. The No. 3 court of Courtney Miller and Katarina Raicevic downed Emily Laskelle and Katie Krawczyk 21-15, 21-16 to clinch the 3-0 victory in the first dual. In the second dual, the pair improved to 15-4 on the year with a 21-17, 21-16 victory.
At the No. 1 position, Megan Crawshaw and Jessalyn Kinlaw grabbed a 21-12, 21-18 victory in the first match. Crawshaw and Kinlaw then clinched the second match and grabbed the share of the title with a 21-16, 21-15 victory.
"I'm excited that our team is co-Atlantic Sun champions," added Loeswick. "Our team is very excited because that was one of our goals, but we are far from done. We still have a few other goals left to accomplish and we are going to continue to work hard and strive to be the best we can be."
Jacksonville's lone win of the day came in the first dual in the No. 2 spot, but Kimberly Ferguson and Lauren Ford bounced back in their second match. After winning the first set, 21-17, Jacksonville grabbed the 21-14 win in the second. The duos then battled to a 21-19 final score with the Ospreys squeezing out the victory.
North Florida now takes a break from conference matches to play in two tournaments before the A-Sun Championship beginning on April 22. UNF heads to Siesta Key to take part in the Fiesta on Siesta beginning with UAB and College of Charleston on Friday.
