FGCU Sneaks Past Beach @OspreyVB to Start A-Sun Tournament

EMERSON, Ga. - It was a tough opening day for No. 2 North Florida beach volleyball as No. 3 Florida Gulf Coast snuck past the Ospreys with a 3-2 win to open the 2016 Atlantic Sun Tournament at the Lakepointe Center.
UNF grabbed a victory from Carina Hoff and Brittany Pase in the No. 5 court, but the Eagles grabbed the other point in the No. 4 position. Pase and Hoff downed Leigh Pudwill and Katherine Puisis, 21-15, 21-18.Â
"It was not quite the start we were hoping for. FGCU played well and challenged us and we lost a couple of really tight sets," said Director of Volleyball Steve Loeswick. "We have to regroup and and prepare for tomorrow and focus on one match at a time."
The No. 1 duo of Jessalyn Kinlaw and Megan Crawshaw put UNF out in front 2-1 with their 21-13, 21-19 win. It came down to a third-set battle in the No. 2 and No. 3 courts with FGCU taking both including a 16-14 victory in the No. 3 spot. When the teams met for the first time during the regular season it was the Ospreys who took the three-set win.
FGCU moves on to play Stetson on Saturday.
With the double elimination style bracket, North Florida now plays No. 5 Jacksonville at 12:30 p.m. on Saturday. If the Ospreys win, they face off with the winner of the Mercer and Coastal Carolina match.Â
