MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. -- The No. 30-ranked North Florida men's golf team continues its spring season slate Saturday and Sunday in the General Hackler Championship at The Dunes Golf & Beach Club.
After posting a runner-up finish in their home event, The Hayt, in their last outing, the Ospreys hope to build on that success and defend their team title at the General Hackler. UNF won last year's eventby 12 shots, at the par 72, 7,233-yard layout with former standout Joey Petronio sharing medalist honors.
"We are looking forward to getting back to competition and it is always nice to return to a place where you've won before," said head coach Scott Schroeder. "This is a good course for us because it requires straight drives and having the ability to control the ball into the greens. It is also nice treat for the team to have the opportunity to stay on the ocean for spring break."
The UNF lineup for the event is led by freshmen standouts Andrew Alligood and Philip Knowles, who both posted Top 5 finishes at The Hayt. The rookie duo will be joined by senior Taylor Hancock along with sophomores Dillon Woods and Jordan Batchelor. Freshman Travis Trace will also compete in the event as an individual.
Coastal Carolina hosts the event that features a competitive 15-team field which includes seven teams currently ranked in Golfstat's Top 50. In addition to the Ospreys, the other squads listed among the Top 50 are No. 16 North Carolina, No. 19 South Carolina, No. 24 Virginia, No. 32 Texas A&M, No. 43 North Carolina State and No. 44 East Carolina.
The General Hackler opens with 36 holes of play Saturday beginning with an 8:30 a.m. shotgun start. North Florida will play alongside Charleston Southern and Texas A&M starting on holes 10-13. Live scoring results for the event are available online at Golfstat.com.
