DURHAM, N.C. – For the third-consecutive year, the North Florida baseball program has a player on the Golden Spikes Award watch list. Senior Corbin Olmstead was part of the 50-player list unveiled today by USA Baseball which annually bestows the award on the top collegiate baseball player in the country.
Â
Of the 50 players on the list, Olmstead is the lone representative from the Atlantic Sun Conference. He follows in the footsteps of former North Florida baseball players, Donnie Dewees (2015) and Drew Weeks (2014), who also have been considered for one of college baseball's most prestigious awards. Last season, Dewees was finished fifth in the final voting.
Â
Olmstead was a unanimous All-American last season doubling as the team's designated hitter and closer. At the plate he was second in the A-Sun with 13 home runs and batted .308 with 42 RBIs. He made 23 relief appearances and tied for the league lead with nine saves. He sported a  0.25 ERA by allowing only one earned run in 35.1 innings pitched. He did not allow an earned run in his first 27.1 innings pitched.
Â
The honor adds to a growing list for Olmstead who was also placed on the NCBWA Preseason Stopper of the Year Watch list on Monday. He was also a preseason All-America selection by Perfect Game and Collegiate Baseball. The A-Sun coaches elected him as a preseason All-Conference selection earlier this spring after becoming the first player in league history to garner First Team honors at two different positions (RP & DH).
Â
Fan voting will continue to be a part of the Golden Spikes Award in 2016, starting on June 1 with the naming of the Golden Spikes Award semifinalists. Amateur baseball fans across the country will be able to vote for their favorite semifinalists at GoldenSpikesAward.com. On June 13, USA Baseball will announce the finalists and voting will begin that day and last until June 25.
The winner of the 39th Golden Spikes Award will be named on Thursday, June 30, at a presentation in Los Angeles. The finalists and their families will be honored at the Rod Dedeaux Foundation Dinner that evening at the Jonathan Club in downtown Los Angeles.
