KENNESAW, Ga. – A slow third quarter doomed North Florida women's basketball as Kennesaw State topped the Ospreys, 76-54, on Monday evening at the KSU Convocation Center.
Sophomore Sierra Shepherd led the team with 17 points on 7-for-13 from the floor, while dishing out two assists and picking up three steals. Kadesia Johnson finished with 11 points and a team-best seven boards alone with five assists.
Despite a low-scoring night for junior Claire Ioannidis, her eight points moved her into eighth in the UNF single-season record book with 383 points with three games left to play. With her first triple of the game, she surpassed Hall of Famer Nancy Miller's best from the 1994-95 season.
It was a tale of two halves as UNF (6-20, 2-9 A-Sun) shot 50 percent in the opening 20 minutes before hitting just 25 percent in the second. Kennesaw State hit 51 percent on 14-for-27 in the first and kept it up in the second as it shot a 48 percent clip from the floor.
The opening 20 minutes saw three tie scores and five lead changes with the final coming in the Owls advantage at 12-10 on a Deandrea Sawyers jumper with 4:16 left in the first. From there, the Ospreys played catch up.
In the second frame, back-to-back three-pointers from Kelly Dulkoski sparked a 13-5 run to give the hosts a 31-24 lead with 3:38 left. Johnson ended the stretch with a jumper followed quickly by a triple from Hadley Kiefer to bring UNF to within two, 33-31, but that was as close as it would get for UNF. A final basket on the KSU end made it a 35-31 halftime score.
Out of the locker room it was Kennesaw State's game as the Owls opened the second frame on 7-0 run and never looked back. Two Shepherd jumpers were two of just three baskets the visitors scored in the third quarter as KSU ballooned its lead to 55-37. The hosts eventually took a 29-point lead in the middle of the final frame to move to 10-16 overall and 5-6 in league action.
Jasmine McAllister paced the Owls with 15 points and 15 rebounds. She helped KSU outrebound UNF, 41-24, and contributed to the 40-24 edge in the paint. Sawyers came off the bench to score a game-high 19 points, while Kelly Dulkoski tallied 12 points – all from long range.
North Florida now returns home for two of its last three games beginning on Saturday with USC Upstate. Game time is set for 2 p.m. at UNF Arena.Â
