TULSA, Okla. - The North Florida men's tennis duo of Jack Findel-Hawkins and Lasse Muscheites battled their way into the ITA All-American Championship Main Draw doubles after picking up a victory against Texas Tech in the Round of 16 on Tuesday.
DOUBLES SUCCESS
Findel-Hawkins and Muscheites fought off Ronit Bisht and Connor Curry of Texas Tech, 6-3, 6-4 in the round of 16 to advance to the Main Draw Doubles. The ITA will release the draws later on Wednesday.
SINGLES RESULTS
In singles competition, Findel-Hawkins fought hard for a three-set win against Georgia's Nathan Ponwith. Eventually, the senior took down the Bulldog, 7-5, 6-7 (5), 7-6 (6). Following that match, the Exmouth, Great Britain native battled with No. 70 Josh Hagar of Notre Dame. It was the Irish though that came out victorious, 6-2, 6-4.
LUCKY DRAW
Findel-Hawkins is now second in line for the Main Draw if two people withdraw from the bracket. He is just behind Igor Smelyanski of Clemson.
COACH FINNEGAN'S FINDINGS
"I am really proud of Jack. He faced off a bunch of adversity and had several match points and didn't take them and saved one match point. It was great for him to come back and fight really hard against an extremely good player from Georgia. In his second match against Notre Dame, he had some chances to claw his way back in, but didn't quite get the job done.
"It was really good for Lasse and Jack to win and make it to the main draw doubles. All-in-all a great day and we live on to fight another day."
STILL WINNING
In the consolation qualifying bracket, Jefta Kecic took down Gonzalo Rashciatore (Middle Tennesee State) 6-4, 7-6 (6-0).
LOOKING AHEAD
The players have Wednesday off to recover and rest. The main draw brackets begin on Thursday.
