9/18/2015 10:30:00 AM | Men's Cross Country, Women's Cross Country
GAINESVILLE, Fla. -- The regionally-ranked North Florida cross country teams return to competition Saturday morning at the competitive Mt. Dew Invitational hosted by the University of Florida. The men's 8k race starts at 7:55 a.m. followed by the women's 5k at 8:30 a.m.
The men's field for the Mt. Dew Invitational features 32 teams highlighted by 11 Division I programs including the South Region No. 5 ranked Ospreys and No. 3 Florida. On the women's side, 32 teams including 13 Division I squads will compete for the title with South Region No. 11 UNF joined by No. 5 Florida State, No. 6 Florida and No. 13 UCF highlighting the field.
"We are looking forward to running in Gainesville," said head coach Jeff Pigg. "The Mt. Dew provides a nice level of competition for this time of year. Both our teams have been working hard and look forward to their next challenge."
The Osprey men, who finished third at last year's Mt. Dew Invitational, are coming off a strong season debut at the UNF Invitational. Junior Michael Damato won the individual title in a time of 25:45 and paced a North Florida squad that boasted nine of the Top 15 finishers.
"Our plan this weekend will be to hold out a couple guys, freshman Logan Poteet and sophomore Nick Morken," added Pigg. "We are excited to see our freshman from Germany, Fynn Timm, open up his Osprey career.  I am really looking to our deep roster for some more good performances."
Sophomore standout Eden Meyer, who captured the individual title in her season debut with a time of 18:05, looks to pace the Osprey squad. UNF finished third at last year's Mt. Dew and posted a 6-1 dual round robin record at the UNF Invitational on Sept. 5.
"It will be very interesting to see Eden pushed by a higher level of competition this weekend," Pigg said. "We are looking forward to seeing some of the other women begin to step up after some struggles in the opening meet."
Following Saturday's run, North Florida will have a two-week break before running in their first meet of the season outside the borders of Florida, racing on Oct. 3 in the Greater Louisville Classic in Louisville, Ky., on the course that will also host the NCAA Championship in November.
