LUBBOCK, Texas -- The No. 23-ranked North Florida men's golf team struggled to round of 291 (+7) on Thursday in the opening round of the NCAA Lubbock Regional played at The Rawls Course.
The Ospreys ended the first day in 13th place at the regional and are currently 12 shots out of the coveted Top 5 spots, which advance to the NCAA Championship. UNF, which overcame an eight shot deficit in the final round of the Atlantic Sun Championship, have 36 more holes of competition to improve and advance.
"We played pretty poorly today," said UNF head coach Scott Schroeder. "We definitely did not have the start we were looking for at all. Our goal will be to play more consistently tomorrow and climb back into the standings and give ourselves a chance going into the final round."
Junior Austin Padova and senior Parker Jones were the Ospreys top two performers as both linksters carded rounds of 1-over 72 to end the day tied for 42nd. Junior Taylor Hancock is tied for 56th after a 2-over 73 and redshirt freshman Dillon Woods posted a 3-over 75 to rank tied for 61st. Senior Joey Petronio rounded out the UNF lineup in a tie for 68th following an opening round 76 ( 5).
No. 2 ranked Texas leads the team competition after firing an 11-under 273 on day one. Houston is one shot behind in second at 274 followed by Duke (276), Texas Tech (278), Purdue (279) and California (279) in the Top 5. Purdue's Austin Eoff shot a 6-under 65 to set atop the individual medalist standings with a one stroke advantage over a group of five golfers.
North Florida begins second round play on Friday from Hole 10 at 9:50 a.m. (10:50 a.m. ET). The Ospreys will play alongside the 10 individual competitors at the event.
