JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – The North Florida softball team defeated JU in both contests Saturday afternoon at the UNF Softball Complex.
Â
The Ospreys (28-23, 9-8 A-Sun) took the first matchup with the Dolphins (23-24, 5-9 A-Sun) 2-1 and came back from being down 6-0 to win game two 7-6 on a walk-off single.
Â
"This was a big day for us. To be able to pull off two conference wins heading into the tournament is huge," said coach Marcie Hickey. "It's important in the standings and important for our confidence going forward."
Â
In game one, the Ospreys struck first with two runs in the first and held off the Dolphins for the remainder of the game. Junior Stacy McClelland scored one run on a SAC fly and freshman Alex Arciola added the second run on a RBI double down the left field line.
Â
In game two, The Dolphins jumped out to a 6-o lead heading into the bottom of the fourth. The Ospreys chipped away, first scoring two runs off of a RBI single by Arciola and a throwing error on the play, followed by a RBI single by junior Lexi Taylor, making the score 6-3 after four innings.
Â
The Ospreys cut the lead to 6-4 after a RBI single by freshman Stephanie Schmidt in the bottom of the fifth.
Â
In the bottom of the seventh, the Ospreys rallied to take the game 7-6. The inning started with a RBI single by junior Shelby Duncan, scoring senior Kelly Wilson. Arciola followed with a SAC fly to tie the game at 6-6. Junior Katie Mandigo followed on the next at-bat with a RBI single on the first pitch, scoring McClelland and closing the game with a 7-6 walk-off win.
Â
Senior Kaylie Wallace earned both wins in the day, throwing a total of 11 and two-third innings, striking out ten and giving up two earned runs.
Â
"Both games took a lot of heart and determination," added Hickey. "In game one our ability to hold a one run lead and then coming from six runs behind in game two really showed how resilient our team is."
Â
The Ospreys are back in action tomorrow for the series finale at 11 a.m. Live stats and a full recap will be available on UNFOspreys.com.
