KANNAPOLIS, N.C. -- No. 24 ranked North Florida swooped to the top of the leaderboard of the Irish Creek Collegiate following back-to-back rounds of par or better Saturday at The Club at Irish Creek (par 71/7.099 yards)
The Ospreys opened the 36-hole day of competition with an even par 284 before carding an afternoon round of 7-under par 277 to finish with a tournament leading total of 561. UNF's second round tally matched the low team score of the day on Saturday.
"The guys played okay in the morning and then pretty well in the second round," said head coach Scott Schroeder. "This course really requires patience and we did a nice job in that area. If we had been able to putt a little better it could have been a very good day. Fortunately, we have put ourselves in place to win another tournament so we are excited and focused on the goal."
Junior Taylor Hancock was the Osprey's top performer on the opening day after posting a pair of rounds under par, shooting 70-68 to rank tied for fifth at 138 (-4).
Senior Joey Petronio and freshman Dillon Woods are tied for 12th at 1-under 141 after both players posted scores of 72-69. Senior Parker Jones is tied for 15th at even par 142 (71-71), while junior Austin Padova rounded out the Osprey lineup in a tie for 22nd at 144 (71-73).
UNF heads to the final round with a two-shot lead over No. 26 Kennesaw State (563) with No. 52 Charlotte (567), No. 17 South Florida (568) and No. 66 East Carolina (569) filling out the list of top five squads.
KSU's Fredrik Nilehn posted rounds of 66-68 to grab the lead in the medalist competition at 134.
Tournament action at Irish Creek concludes with a final round of play scheduled for a shotgun start at 8:30 a.m. North Florida, who finished second in the event last year, will play alongside Kennesaw State and Charlotte on Sunday.
