KANNAPOLIS, N.C. -- Junior Taylor Hancock captured a share of his first individual medalist title to lead the No. 24-ranked North Florida to a runner-up finish in the Irish Creek Collegiate at The Club at Irish Creek on Sunday.
Hancock fired his third consecutive round under par shooting a 1-under 70 to finish with a tournament total 208 (-5) and match the scores of Fredrik Nilehn (Kennesaw State) and Rigel Fernandes (South Florida).
As a team, the Ospreys struggled on the final day posting a 293 to slip one stroke behind No. 17 South Florida, who closed the day with a 285. UNF tallied a 54-hole score of 854 (+2).
"It was a great job by Taylor as he kept us in the team hunt." said head coach Scott Schroeder. "I'm very happy for him with all the work he has put in and with his great attitude about everything. We played pretty poorly for most of the day as a team. We were still in it late after making a few birdies but a few mistakes down the stretch cost us from winning. Hopefully, we will learn that every shot counts the same no matter if its in the first round or the final round. Overall, we still had a solid regular season with all we have been through. Our record is 114-34 while playing a Top 35 schedule in the country. I'm pretty proud of these guys."
Joining Hancock in the Top 20 were senior Joey Petronio in a tie for 12th at 214 including a final round 73 and freshman Dillon Woods tied for 17th at 215 (74). Junior Austin Padova and senior Parker Jones tied for 35th at 220, shooting rounds of 76 and 78, respectively.
USF earned the team championship with a total of 853 followed by UNF in second. Kennesaw State was third at 856 with East Carolina (860) and Charlotte (863) rounding out the top five rankings.
North Florida will now turns its attention to the Atlantic Sun Conference Championship which begins April 19 in Braselton, Ga., at Chateau Elan.
