STATESBORO, Ga. -- The No. 26-ranked North Florida men's golf team ended the opening round tied for ninth following a 2-under 286 on Friday at the Schenkel Invitational.
The Ospreys struggled to find any real consistent on day one of the 54-hole event that features a field with 11 of 15 teams currently ranked in the Top 50 nationally. No. 6 Vanderbilt and No. 11 Auburn both concluded the first round at double-digits under par.
"It was not a very good day for us today," said head coach Scott Schroeder. "We made a few too many small mistakes. We need to clean those up and hopefully we can have a strong finish. Playing 36 holes on the final day because of threatening weather will be something different for us so it will be good to see how we handle that challenge."
Junior Austin Padova was the top performer for UNF firing a 2-under 70 to finish the round tied for 17th. Fellow junior Taylor Hancock is tied for 31st after posting a 1-under 71.
Redshirt freshman Dillon Woods shot an even par 72 to rank tied for 38th while seniors Joey Petronio and Parker Jones rounded out the Osprey travel squad with rounds of 1-over 73 to sit in a tie for 49th. Sophomore Osten Waite, who is competing in the event as an individual, also shot a first round 73.
Vandy leads the team competition after firing a 15-under 273, while Auburn is just one shot behind at 274 (-14). No. 22 Wake Forest is third at 279 with No. 50 North Carolina State (281) and No. 48 Georgia Southern (282) filling out the top five teams.Â
Auburn's Ben Schlottman tops the individual medalist standings after recording a 6-under 66 on the first day.
With threatening weather likely on Sunday, the Schenkel will conclude with 36 holes of play on Saturday beginning at 8:30 a.m. with a shotgun start. North Florida will play alongside Kentucky and No. 41 Iowa on the final day.
