PONTE VEDRA BEACH, Fla. -- Sparked by a runner-up finish from redshirt freshman Dillon Woods, the No. 29 North Florida men's golf team earned a second-place finish against a collection of some of the nation's top collegiate golf programs Sunday afternoon at The Hayt hosted by Sawgrass Country Club.
Woods, a native of Jacksonville, carded a final round 74 (+2) and finished the 54-hole event with a 1-over par 217, five shots behind Texas sophomore standout Beau Hossler. UNF junior Taylor Hancock fired a final round 1-under 71 en route to finishing third at 218 (+2).
Senior Joey Petronio finished tied for 10th at 221 after a 75 on Sunday while junior Austin Padova was tied for 15th at 222 following a third consecutive round of 74. Senior Parker Jones filled out the Osprey lineup for the event with a final 78 to finish in a tie for 53rd (232).
"We had another great day of playing by guys for most of the round," said head coach Scott Schroeder. "We were tied with Texas after 12 holes but then made a couple of bogeys that really hurt us in the end. I thought Dillon (Woods) did a super job of battling all weekend especially today when he played alongside two of the best golfers in college golf (Beau Hossler and Jordan Niebrugge). It was definitely a great opportunity and experience for him that will hopefully help him moving forward. I was really proud of how these guys just went out and focused on playing well despite all the off course stuff they dealt with."
In addition to the tournament lineup, a trio of Ospreys linksters competed in the event as indivduals. Junior Joe Stepnes finished tied for 43rd (229) after a final round 78 with sophomore Osten Waite tied for 53rd (232) and freshman Jordan Batchelor tied for 77th (242).
The No. 8 Longhorns followed up their weekend best round of 280 on Saturday with a final round 291 to claim team championship honors by six shots with an 8-over 872. No. 26 Oklahoma State, the defending tournament champion of The Hayt, finished third at 883 with No. 16 UCLA (885) and two-time defending national champion No. 18 Alabama (893) rounding out the top five squads.
North Florida will make a quick return to action as the Ospreys will next play at the General Hackler Championship on Mar. 9-10 in Myrtle Beach, S.C.
