Â
HIGHLAND HEIGHTS, Ky. – Although Paulina Zaveckaite had her 12th double-double of the season, turnovers and cold shooting plagued University of North Florida women's basketball in a 67-29 loss to Northern Kentucky on Saturday night at Regents Hall.
Â
"We were as cold as today's weather," said head coach Mary Tappmeyer. "As well as we executed our game plan on Thursday night, we poorly executed tonight's game plan. It was really disappointing, but Northern Kentucky took advantage of our lack of depth. We did not handle the adversity well. I'm still proud of our two seniors who continued to battle regardless of the circumstances."
Â
Zaveckaite paced the Ospreys with 15 points and 12 rebounds. It was her seventh double-double in conference play and her second against Northern Kentucky this season.
UNF shot 22.0 percent (11-for-50).
Â
Christine Roush led the Norse with 14 points and six rebounds.
Â
Northern Kentucky shot 41.7 percent (25-for-60) and got 23 points off 17 of UNF's turnovers. The Norse also out-rebounded the Ospreys 46-35.
Â
After a three-pointer from Sierra Shepherd started the game, Northern Kentucky responded with a 9-0 run. The Norse went on to push their lead to 10 points at 11:04 on a Kelley Wiegman trey. Zaveckaite cut it down to a seven-point deficit at 10:48 when she sank a trey. It was the third-straight game in which she had drained a three-point shot.
Â
Faith Sanders made a jumper at 10:02 to give Northern Kentucky the 21-12 advantage, but that was the last field goal for either team over the next six minutes and 42 seconds. During that field goal drought, the only point was a free throw by Taru Madekivi at 7:30.
Â
The field goal scoreless stretch ended at 3:20 on a Shar'Rae Davis trey. UNF saw the Norse end the first half on a 12-2 run as Northern Kentucky was up 33-15 at the break.
Â
Northern Kentucky quickly pushed its lead to 28 points in the second half, using a 13-3 run to go up 46-18 at 15:10. The Ospreys trimmed the Norse's lead down to 25 multiple times, but Northern Kentucky continued to pull away. The Norse took their largest lead – 40 points – on a pair of Courtney Roush free throws at 1:41 that made it 67-27. However, Smith scored the last two points of the game with a pair of free throws at 1:28.
Â
UNF hosts its final home game of the season on Wednesday. The Ospreys welcome league leader Florida Gulf Coast to UNF Arena. Tip-off is set for 7 p.m., and the game will air live on ESPN3 with Brent Martineau and Jessica Blaylock on the call.
