SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The North Florida Women's Soccer team played to a scoreless draw against USC Upstate in conference action Sunday afternoon in Spartanburg, S.C.
Â
The Ospreys (4-10-1, 2-3-1 A-Sun) now sit in a tie for fifth place in the A-Sun Standings and will turn their attention to Jacksonville next Friday in their final regular season match.
Â
"You can't fault the effort from both teams Obviously USC Upstate was playing with a lot of emotion after their difficult week they have had, and our thoughts go out to their entire athletic department and school," said coach Robin Confer. "Upstate put a lot of numbers behind the ball and were organized defensively."
Â
The Ospreys had their chances but couldn't find the back of the net. In the third minute, junior Alexis Bredeau took a cross by junior Kayla Aritt into the box, but the shot went high.
Â
In the 64th minute, Bredeau fired a shot in that forced the Upstate keeper to tip it over the bar.
Â
In the 86th minute, sophomore Katy Mixon found herself in front of the goal, but the shot was deflected by the Upstate defense.
Â
In the 91st minute in the first overtime, a goal mouth scramble almost saw an Osprey golden-goal, but several shots were deflected before senior Lanie Keating's shot went over the bar.
Â
The Ospreys almost found the net in the final seconds of the second overtime when freshman Mackenzie Meisler got a cross in to Mixon, but her shot was saved by the Upstate keeper.
Â
North Florida held the overall shot advantage 18-12 and the on-target advantage 9-3.
Â
Bredeau led the way for the Ospreys, firing six shots, three of which were on goal.
Â
On the defensive side, junior Susie Ford and Victoria Ekeli combined for the shutout, while the back line of junior Jenna Steininger, sophomore Jess Kinlaw and junior Kendall Pollock all played the full match.
Â
"We created some dangerous chances but we have to finish," added Confer. "It has been the difference in earning points in conference this year. We have a huge game on Friday and need a result"
Â
The Ospreys close their regular season next Friday at 7 p.m. against cross-town rival Jacksonville in the annual River City Rumble.
