Â
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – University of North Florida women's basketball could not respond to a late second-half Kennesaw State run in a 46-40 loss on Thursday night at the KSU Convocation Center.
Â
"Typically, when you hold someone to 46 points, you should win a basketball game," said head coach Mary Tappmeyer. "I was disappointed in our defensive effort in the second half. During the first half, we had a tough time on offense, but we were making stops. In the second half, we let our inability to score effect our defensive intensity."
Â
Both teams had a tough time shooting the ball, but UNF was only able to shot 23.0 percent (14-for-60) from the field.
Â
Destinee Smith tallied 10 points, while Paulina Zaveckaite pulled down 15 rebounds. Janeá Williams made three blocks.
Â
Jasmine McAllister and Deandrea Sawyers both had 10 points for Kennesaw State. McAllister also added 15 rebounds for her 11th double-double of the season.
Â
The Owls shot 31.7 percent (19-for-60)
Â
UNF held a clear advantage in rebounds, pulling down 55 compared to the Owls' 36.
Â
After Williams had the Ospreys' first bucket at 17:31, UNF experienced a scoring drought that spanned almost eight minutes as the Owls built up a 9-2 lead. A layup from Zaveckaite at 9:47 ended the scoreless streak and sparked an 8-0 run that put UNF up by one. A jumper from Kadesia Johnson at 6:39 provided UNF with the 10-9 advantage. Control of the game flip-flopped between the two teams as Kennesaw State went up 16-15 on a Sawyers trey at 4:25. However, UNF finished the half on a five-point run – all from free throws – in order to take a 20-16 lead into halftime.
Â
UNF gained a five-point lead at 13:54 as a Maiya Rumph free throw made it 27-22. However, Kennesaw State quickly tied it behind an Aareon Smith three-pointer and a Valescia Dixon layup. UNF gradually regained a five-point advantage, using a Williams layup at 8:38 to go up 36-31.
Â
Kennesaw State responded with a 7-0 run took a 38-36 advantage with a Kelly Dulkoski trey at 6:13. Although a layup from Destinee Smith evened the game at 38-38 at 4:21, the Owls used a six-point run to pull away and went up 44-38 at 1:25. Two free throws from Amber Robinson pulled UNF to within four, but Kristina Wells connected on two free throws with 13 seconds to go for the game's final points.
Â
UNF finishes the first half of conference play at USC Upstate on Saturday. Tip-off is set for 2 p.m., and will air live on ESPN3.
