MACON, Ga. – Two singles champions and a doubles championship sweep highlighted University of North Florida women's tennis' final day of competition at the Mercer Bear Gridiron Classic.
Â
"The better teams rise to the occasion on the last day and I'm happy with how well we were able to do that today," said head coach Audra Cohen. "We started our doubles with good energy and played aggressive tennis. In singles, we improved from yesterday and were able to instill the changes we spoke about after yesterday's matches."
Â
Doubles started the day with play resuming in the semifinals after matches on Saturday were suspended due to weather. Rebeca Pereira and Luise Intert won the Doubles A Flight, while Quetzali Vazquez and Esther Zuniga won an all-UNF showdown in Flight B. Pereira and Intert took an 8-6 decision over South Alabama's Laura Valkova and Mary Angela Martin in the semifinals. The pair took home the title with an 8-4 victory against South Alabama's Clinta Papke and Laura Matuskova.
Â
Vazquez and Zuniga cruised to an 8-2 win in Flight B semifinals and advanced to face Mariella Calderon and Michelle Valdez, who won their semifinal match 8-3. Vazquez and Zuniga emerged with an 8-5 victory.
Â
In singles, Vazquez picked up her second title of the day in the all-UNF Flight C Championship match. Facing Julia Sbircea, Vazquez won the match with a 6-0, 6-2 decision.
Â
Taylor Hollander used a hard-fought three-set victory to defeat Papke in the Flight B Finals. After falling 6-2 in the first set, Hollander rebounded with 6-4 scores in each of the final two sets.
Â
UNF also took home third place in two of the singles flights. Zuniga topped Marina Cunningham 6-1, 6-3 in an all-Osprey match in Flight A. Pereira took a 6-1, 6-3 win over Matuskova in the Flight B third-place match.
Â
The fall season continues for UNF Sept. 19-21 at the University of Miami Invite held at the Neil Schiff Tennis Center.
