CORAL GABLES, Fla. – Three University of North Florida women's tennis players will go up against stiff competition at this weekend's three-day Miami Hurricane Invitational held at the Neil Schiff Tennis Center. Michelle Valdez, Quetzali Vazquez and Esther Zuniga are scheduled to compete in singles and doubles.
Â
"This is a great opportunity for all three to embrace the challenge," said head coach Audra Cohen. "They will have to focus on playing their opponent and not themselves in order to be successful this weekend."
Â
For singles, Zuniga will be in the Orange Flight with Valdez and Vazquez in the Green Flight. Vazquez will have a tough match to open the tournament as she plays Miami's No. 111 Monique Albuquerque in the Round of 16. Valdez is set to face USF's Olga Martinez, while Zuniga goes up against Pitt's Audrey Ann Blakely.
Â
In doubles, all three will be in the Green Flight. Zuniga and Vazquez team up and play Miami's Wendy Zhang and Sinead Lohan in the quarterfinals. Valdez is paired with Pitt's Molly Wickman and faces Auburn's Reka Muller and Jen Pfeifler.
Â
Zuniga, Vazquez and Valdez had strong starts at last weekend's Mercer Bear Gridiron Classic to begin the fall season. Vazquez won the Flight C singles title and teamed with Zuniga to capture the Flight B doubles crown. Zuniga took third in Flight A singles, while Valdez reached the Flight B doubles finals with Mariella Calderon.
Â
Play at the Miami Hurricane Invitational begins on Friday at 9 a.m., with doubles matches. All three Ospreys are scheduled to play their singles matches at 11:30 a.m.
