Final Results
Â
CORAL GABLES, Fla. – University of North Florida women's tennis finished the Miami Hurricane Invitational with five wins, advancing two players to the consolation finals on the last day of competition at the Neil Schiff Tennis Center.
Â
"Today was a great day for Quetzali and Esther," said head coach Audra Cohen. "They stepped up and battled from start to finish in both of their matches. I was particularly impressed with their poise and tenacity."
Â
Both Quetzali Vazquez and Esther Zuniga reached the consolation championship match of their respective flights. However, time constraints due to weather delays on Friday and Saturday prevented the singles finals matches from being played.
Â
In Orange Singles, Zuniga had a pair of two-set victories. She defeated Pitt's Callie Frey 7-5, 6-2 in the quarterfinals and then posted a 6-3, 6-1 semifinals win over USF's Vero Bessonova.
Â
In Green Singles, Vazquez captured a quick 6-1, 6-0 quarterfinal triumph over USF's Hailey Grillo. She topped Pitt's Molly Wickman 6-2, 6-1 in the semifinals. Wickman had defeated Michelle Valdez earlier on Sunday in the quarterfinals, winning 6-4, 6-7, 10-8. Valdez later competed in 13th place bracket, picking up a 6-1, 6-3 victory over Grillo in order to advance to that bracket's finals.
Â
"Michelle had a tough first round and my hope is that she learns from that match and steps up for the program moving forward," said Cohen. "She has all the potential and this tournament taught her that potential is not enough to win at this level. You have to have courage and a lot of heart. This morning, she needed more to win a match against a scrappy player like Wickman. I was happy with how Michelle bounced back in the afternoon; it shows she is learning and making changes."
