Common Opponents in 2014
Bonus Soccer: The Ospreys suffered a 2-1, overtime loss to Furman University on Saturday night who received votes in the latest NSCAA Top 25 Coaches Poll. Last season the Ospreys played in a school-record, six matches that needed to be decided in extra time. North Florida finished with a record of 2-1-3 in overtime games last season and suffered with their only loss coming against Florida Atlantic on Sept. 22, 2013.
Series History: Georgia State and North Florida have met a total of four times, all in North Florida's Division I era (2006-present). The Ospreys won in back-to-back meetings in 2007 and 2008 including a 2-1 decision on the road. The Panthers have enjoyed recent success combining to outscore the Ospreys, 5-1 in meetings 2009 and 2012. The most recent contest was a 3-1 win by the Panthers in the inaugural Mike Gibbs Memorial Tournament on Aug. 26, 2012.
Signs of Progress: Head Coach Derek Marinatos has turned the North Florida men's soccer program in the right direction since arriving in Jacksonville in 2011. The overtime loss to Furman was an encouraging result considering, the Paladins pinned a 5-0 setback on the Ospreys back in 2012.
Foul Trouble: Sunday's 4-0 loss to the College of Charleston was the worst defeat for the Ospreys since 2012. North Florida played the match a man down for over 30 minutes and surrendered a penalty kick goal for the second time this season. The Ospreys also had a penalty kick opportunity that was saved midway through the second half.
All-Tournament Team: A trio of Ospreys were named to the Gray Griffin Memorial Tournament All-Tournament Team last weekend. Simen Solstad, who scored the team's lone goal, along with Teddy Mulamba and Diogo Quirino garnered honors. Solstad scored the team's lone goal of the weekend which marked the fourth-straight game he found the back of the net. Quirino was named to his second-straight All-Tournament Team. He was also the Atlantic Sun Fan-Voted Preseason Defensive Player of the Year.
Sneak Peak: Both teams got a sneak peak of each other in last weekend's Gray Griffin Memorial Tournament hosted by Furman University. Although they were part of the four-team tournament field, they did not face each other. Neither squad was able to pull out a victory against host, Furman and the College of Charleston.
About Georgia State: Saturday will mark the first home game of the season for the Panthers who are seeking their first win of 2014. Georgia State was 9-9-1 in 2013 and enjoyed a 7-2 record on their home turf. The Panthers were also 2-0 last season against Atlantic Sun foes, defeating Lipscomb and Mercer. Georgia State has been shutout in each of their last three games to start the season. Ironically the Panthers were shutout their first three games last season but bounced back to win eight of their final 12 games.
