JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – The Atlantic Sun's top offense was on display this evening at Harmon Stadium, as the North Florida defeated Lipscomb, 15-0 in the series opener. The 15 runs is a season-high for Ospreys and the win is the team's first shutout of 2014.
Â
The Ospreys moved to 10-12 in Atlantic Sun play and 21-25 overall. The third place Bisons drop to 27-23 on the year and 14-8 against conference opponents.
Â
Osprey starting pitcher, David Trexler got more than enough run support in his sixth win of the season. The senior right-hander threw 100 pitches in seven innings and struck out two in the victory. Freshman Alex Smith preserved the shutout with two scoreless innings of relief. He also struck out a pair of batters and has yet to yield an earned run this season.
Â
At the plate, Corbin Olmstead provided the firepower and was 3-for-3 with two RBIs including his 10th home run of the season. With the Ospreys already up 6-0 in the third, Olmstead belted a fastball that cleared the scoreboard in left for a two-run homer. The tape measure shot moves into a tie for the Atlantic Sun lead in home runs.
Â
Seven Ospreys recorded multiple-hit efforts and the Ospreys as a team totaled 16 hits in the game. It is the 12th-straight game that North Florida has compiled 10 or more hits. Junior Alex Bacon helped the Ospreys in the early going with an RBI double in the second and an RBI single in the third. He drove in two runs and also scored a run. His double in the second was his 42nd of his career which is the third most in the Division I era.
Â
Right fielder Drew Weeks was also among the Ospreys with two hits. He was 2-for-4 on the night with two runs scored and an RBI. He bumped his national-leading average up to .461 with his 88th and 89th hits of the season. He also showed off his arm in the outfield, catching a Bison runner who slipped rounding first for his 11th outfield assist, which also leads the country.
Â
Junior Garrick Ferguson rounded out the multiple RBI efforts with two hits in four at bats. He drove in two on a double in the second inning. He now has recorded two or more hits in his last four starts. Kyle Brooks, Patrick Ervin and Peyton Walsh each had two hits to help power the Osprey offense.
Â
The Ospreys capitalized on three Lipscomb errors in the game. An error in the second inning allowed four unearned runs come across. A fielding error in the fifth led to another four unearned runs and essentially put the game out of reach. The Ospreys scored runs in all but three turns at the plate and never looked back. Of the 15 Osprey runs, only six were earned.
Â
Regularly coming on in the late innings to pitch, freshman Tyler DuPont came on to pinch hit in the sixth and recorded his first collegiate hit and RBI.
Â
Lipscomb starter Ian Martinez-McGraw (7-3) took the loss in the contest lasting only 2.1 innings. Only two of the six runs he allowed were earned. He came into the contest tied for second in the Atlantic Sun for wins with seven.
Â
The Ospreys will be back on the diamond tomorrow afternoon for the second game of the three-game series against Lipscomb. North Florida will honor its three graduating seniors, Ryan McMahon, David Trexler and Peyton Walsh prior to the game. First pitch is scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
