EUGENE, Ore. -- After shooting a second round 297 on Friday, the No. 51-ranked North Florida men's golf team is tied for fifth with No. 10 Houston heading into Saturday's final round of the NCAA Regional at Eugene Country Club.
With a 36-hole total of 583, the Ospreys will battle in the final round in hopes of finishing among the top five teams to advance to the NCAA Championships. UNF has reached the final tournament in each of the past two seasons.
Junior Parker Jones led the way for UNF on day two carding a second consecutive round of 2-over 72. Jones is tied for 19th at 144, while fellow junior MJ Maguire is the top placed Osprey in a tie for 14th at 143 following Friday's round of 75.
"We got off to another good start for the most part but again struggled on the back nine," said UNF head coach Scott Schroeder. "Parker (Jones) played another solid round to help keep us in the mix. We need some one to step up tomorrow and play well. It will be fun to see who is going to be that player. Tomorrow's round is what we've worked towards all season, so I look forward to watching the guys battle."
Sophomores Taylor Hancock and Austin Padova both ended the round tied for 37th at 149 after rounds of 74 and 77, respectively. Junior Joey Petronio rounded out the Osprey lineup with a round of 76 and is currently tied for 46th at 150.
No. 3-ranked Stanford continues to top the team standings at 2-under 558, holding a nine shot lead over the field. No. 15 Oklahoma is second at 567 followed by tournament host No. 40 Oregon 569, No. 22 South Carolina (579), UNF and Houston, Chattanooga (587), ETSU (589), No. 47 Tennessee (591), No. 34 Liberty (592), No. 27 Baylor (598), Wichita State (607) and Northern Colorado (611).
The Cardinals' Patrick Rodgers, one of the nation's top ranked golfers, leads the medalist competition by six shots owning a two-round tally of 133 (-7).
North Florida will be paired with South Carolina and Houston off hole No. 1 in Saturday's final round beginning at 7:50 a.m. (PT). Live scoring results are available online at Golfstat.com.
