JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – The 2013-14 seasons end for University of North Florida women's basketball on Saturday against Kennesaw State at UNF Arena. It will also be Senior Day as UNF recognizes Ki Conner, Larkira Jones, Raneisha Lamar, Chandler Merkerson and student manager Steph Richman prior to the game.
Â
"Although we didn't have a winning season and did not attain the goals we had set, I am thankful to have coached these four seniors," said head coach Mary Tappmeyer. "Our record does not reflect success, but I know that these seniors will be very successful for the rest of their lives. The team will do everything it can to send them out on a positive note. It was a year of life lessons and tough times, but I am honored to have coached team and proud of how they have represented the University of North Florida."
Â
The Ospreys' postseason fate was determined after Thursday's 71-65 loss to Mercer. UNF needed to win that game in order to remain in contention for the No. 8 seed in the Atlantic Sun Tournament. However, UNF battled tough against Mercer, who will either be the No. 4 or No. 5 seed in next week's tournament. Trailing by 16 in the second half, the Ospreys cut their deficit to one game at the 1:49 on a three-pointer by Destinee Smith.
Â
UNF is an all-time 3-5 in their final game of the regular season, but has won its last two season finales. In 2012, Larkira Jones made a buzzer-beating layup to lift UNF to a 46-44 victory at Jacksonville. Last season, Jadhken Kerr registered her 1,000th point as the Ospreys won 61-49 at Lipscomb.
Â
On Thursday night, Kennesaw State clinched the No. 7 seed for next week's Atlantic Sun Tournament, but suffered a 65-46 setback at Jacksonville. The Owls have dropped their last six games, scoring 60-or-less points in five of those games. Kennesaw State's last win was a 53-39 victory over Northern Kentucky on Feb. 8 at the KSU Convocation Center, but the Owls have not registered a road win since defeating Lipscomb 82-78 on Jan. 9 in Nashville. Kristina Wells leads the team with 15.8 points and 8.9 rebounds per game. Deandrea Sawyers also averages 12.8 points per game.
Â
Kennesaw State leads the all-time series 20-15 and won the last meeting 59-51 in Kennesaw on Jan. 4.
Â
Tip-off for Saturday's game is set for 1 p.m.
