FT. MYERS, Fla. -- The North Florida sand volleyball team will look to continue its winning ways in Atlantic Sun Conference play this weekend with a pair of duals scheduled against Florida Gulf Coast and Mercer at FGCU's courts.
The Ospreys (7-3, 2-0) are coming off a hard-fought sweep of Stetson on Tuesday in their league opener. UNF, the two-time defending Atlantic Sun champion, edged the Hatters twice by the score of 3-2, handing them their first losses of the season. The wins extended UNF's current regular season win streak against conference foes to 10 matches. The Ospreys are also a perfect 7-0 in ASun Tournament matches.
"The team is excited to continue conference play and also looking forward to the opportunity of getting better," said UNF head coach Steve Loeswick. "Both Mercer and FGCU are improved programs from last season and will provide us with a challenging and exciting weekend of competition."
UNF has gotten solid play from the top of its lineup as the No. 1 pair of Dagnija Medina/Kim Hildreth have posted a 6-4 overall record including a 1-1 mark in league play. The tandem of Anna Budinska/Cari Whitmire went undefeated against Stetson and own a 7-3 record this season at No. 2, while Cameron McGuire/Tanner Garbutt have teammed for a 7-2 mark (2-0 ASun) playing matches at both No. 3 and 4.
In the Osprey's recent three-match win streak, Julie Trembley and Britt Claessens have reunited as a pairing to post a 2-1 record (1-1 in ASun) at No.4 and 5 spot. Trembley/Claessens tallied a 16-3 record last season as a tandem.
Florida Gulf Coast is 1-8-1 this season after having their midweek match against Webber International halted due to lightning. The Eagles dropped all four matches in their conference opening competitions against Stetson and Jacksonville. Mercer is 5-3 on the year and will be making their ASun debut for 2014.
North Florida meets Mercer for the first match at 10 a.m. on Friday before battling FGCU at Noon. On Saturday, UNF-Mercer is slated to start at Noon followed by the Ospreys-Eagles rematch at 2 p.m.
