FT. MYERS, Fla. -- The North Florida sand volleyball team continued its winning ways in Atlantic Sun Conference play Friday with a pair of victories over Mercer and FGCU at Estero Community Park.
The Ospreys (9-3, 4-0 ASun) topped Mercer (5-4, 0-1), 4-1, in the opening match of the day before sweeping FGCU (1-9, 0-5), 5-0, on their home courts. Against the Bears, four of the five pairings went to a third set while UNF posted straight set victories in all five pairs against the Eagles.
Against Mercer, North Florida's top tandem of Dagnija Medina/Kim Hildreth collected their seventh win of the season topping MU's Natalie Braun/Tori Penrod in straight sets (21-19, 21-16). UNF's No. 2 tandem of Anna Budinska/Cari Whitmire remained undefeated in ASun play after rallying past Jamie Duffy/Emma Peel in three sets (16-21, 21-17, 15-8).
Mercer claimed their lone win of the match at the No. 3 position, as the Bear's duo of Zoe Becton/Emily Rochefort outlasted UNF's Cameron McGuire/Tanner Garbutt in three sets (21-19, 17-21, 15-11). Britt Claessens/Julie Trembley edged Caroline Carlton/Demi-Shay Watchorn at No. 4 (21-17, 19-21, 15-13) and the pair of of Allison Shirley/Emily Strack defeated Hannah Sorensen/Avery Hoven at No. 5 (19-21, 21-12, 15-7).
In the Osprey's match against FGCU, Claessens/Trembley got UNF on the board first with a 2-0 sweep (21-13, 21-12) over Elenora Kazarian/Shelby Joslin at No. 4 followed quickly by No. 5 duo Shirley/Strack beating the Eagle's duo of Marlene Moeller/Madi Wilcox in straight sets (21-11, 21-12).
At No. 2, Budinska/Whitmire earned their seventh consecutive win after topping Karina Mambuca/Vanessa Benke, 2-0 (21-9, 21-19) while top pair Medina/Hildreth posted a sweep of their own over Kaitlin Holm/Whitney Masters (21-14, 21-12). The Osprey's No. 3 tandem of McGuire/Garbutt rebounded for the 2-0 (21-14, 21-18) win over Olivia Mesner/Caroline Jordan to secure the match sweep.
North Florida will face both Mercer and Florida Gulf Coast in rematches on Saturday at Noon and 2 p.m., respectively.
