Â
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – University of North Florida softball fell 6-1 in the Atlantic Sun series finale to USC Upstate on Sunday afternoon at the UNF Softball Complex. The Spartans scored five runs in the fifth inning to get the win.
Â
UNF jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the second inning. On the first pitch she faced, Marissa Thomas belted a lead-off homer over the left field wall. It was Thomas' fourth home run of the season and her second in the series with USC Upstate.
Â
However, the Osprey's lead was short-lived as USC Upstate tied the game at 1-1 in the top of the third. A UNF fielding error allowed Kendall Settlemyre to score the game-tying run.
Â
USC Upstate then surged out front in the fifth. Dana Landers drove in Shellie Robinson with a RBI single to centerfield to put the Spartans up 2-1. Landers ultimately gave USC Upstate the 3-1 lead when she scored on a bases loaded passed ball. Another Osprey miscue resulted in Lindsey Greeson getting home. The Spartans' final two runs happened on another passed ball.
Â
Kaylie Wallace received the loss after allowing one earned run off four hits in 4.1 innings. She also struck out two.
Â
Anna Miller pitched all 7.0 innings to get the win, striking out 11 and allowing one run off five hits.
