JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – University of North Florida rallied late to take Game One, but fell behind early in Game Two to split its doubleheader with Lipscomb, who is receiving votes in both the USA Today/NFCA Top 25 and ESPN.com/USA Softball Collegiate Top 25 polls, on Saturday afternoon at the UNF Softball Complex. The Ospreys won the first game 12-4 in six innings, but Lipscomb won the second 9-0 in five innings.
Â
Lipscomb got out to a 4-0 lead, scoring runs in the third, fourth and fifth innings. The Lady Bisons got their first two runs in the third on an Osprey miscue. Lipscomb added another run in the fourth when Bridgette Begle scored off a Brianne Welch groundout to make it 3-0. In the fifth, Begle's RBI single through the right side allowed Gracey Aguirre to score the Lady Bisons' fourth run.
Â
UNF answered with a five-run fifth inning, while capitalizing on three Lipscomb errors. Two Lady Bisons miscues during the same play allowed both Mariah Reynolds and Danica Mandarano get home and cut Lipscomb's lead down to two. A Lipscomb muffed throw allowed Kelly Wilson to score and avoid being caught in a rundown in between third and home. With a runner on first, Marissa Thomas belted a double to center field that drove in Ashia Kerr for the game-tying run. Thomas had the go-ahead run as Ashley Holton hit a two-out single to right field as the Ospreys took a 5-4 lead.
Â
The Ospreys sealed the win with a powerful seven-run sixth inning that included five hits. Both Thomas and Katie Mandigo registered one-out, two-run RBI-singles, while Mariah Reynolds drilled a two-run double to left center to put UNF up 11-4. Holton scored the game-finishing run off Lexi Taylor's bunt.
Â
Kayla Goff came in relief, pitching the final 3.0 innings for the win, keeping the Lady Bisons to one unearned run and two hits. She also struck out one.
Â
Heather Parker received the loss after allowing five runs – three earned – off four hits. She fanned five batters.
Â
Thomas went 3-for-4 from the plate for UNF with three RBI and two runs scored.
Â
Begele led Lipscomb with a 2-for-3 showing and one RBI and one run.
Â
In Game Two, all of Lipscomb's runs came in the first two innings. Paige Neely and Aguirre hit back-to-back one-out home runs in the first to give the Lady Bisons a 2-0 lead.
Â
Lipscomb added to its lead with a seven-run second inning. Two Osprey errors allowed Lipscomb to score its first three runs of the inning. Kristen Sturdivant drilled a two-out double down the right field line, driving in three runs as Lipscomb went up 8-0. Sturdivant then had the game's final run when she got home on a Begle single.
Â
Kaylie Wallace was credited with the loss after allowing three earned runs off four hits and striking out one in 1.1 innings.
Â
Ashley Anderson had the win after holding the Ospreys to three hits in 5.0 innings. Anderson struck out four.
Â
Holton was 2-for-2 from the plate.
Â
Welch was 2-for-3 with one run. Sturdivant tallied three RBI.
