JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Atlantic Sun Conference play begins for University of North Florida softball with a three-game series against Lipscomb at the UNF Softball Complex this Saturday and Sunday.
"This will be an exciting weekend with the start of our conference schedule," said head coach Marcie Hickey. "Lipscomb has had a strong preseason, so I expect the weekend will be a battle."
This weekend's series is the first of four conference series to take place at the UNF Softball Complex. UNF is an all-time 7-10 in its A-Sun opening series. It is just the sixth time in the Ospreys' A-Sun history that they have begun the conference season at home.
The Ospreys come off a 3-2 victory over Mount St. Mary's on Thursday. Kelly Wilson scored the game-winning run in the seventh inning off of Abby Tewey's walk-off single to left field. UNF is 5-1 on its home field this season. Last year against conference opponents, UNF went 10-2 on its home field.
Five Ospreys are hitting above .300 already this season with Wilson having a team-best .351. Ashia Kerr is slugging .617 and leads the team with three homers and four doubles. Meanwhile, in the circle, all Cortney Radke, Kaylie Wallace and Kayla Goff each have under a 2.00 ERA and the trio has combined for a 1.56 team ERA.
Prior to making the trip to Jacksonville, Lipscomb posted a 13-0 victory over Belmont on Thursday. Lipscomb has received votes in both the USA Today/NFCA Top 25 and ESPN.com/USA Softball Collegiate Top 25 polls this season. The Lady Bisons had two marquee wins two weeks ago, defeating then-No. 14/16 Baylor on Feb. 15 and UAB, who was receiving votes, on Feb. 16. Both Paige Neely and Gracey Aguirre lead the team with .423 and .400 batting averages, respectively. Lipscomb's pitching staff has a 1.82 team ERA. Ashley Anderson has a 1.35 ERA through 31.0 innings, while Tanner Sanders has a 1.69 ERA in 41.1 innings.
Lipscomb leads the all-time series 11-7 and won the last meeting 3-1 in UNF's first game of the 2013 Atlantic Sun Tournament on May 9 at Draper Diamond. However, the Ospreys took last year's regular-season three-game series 2-1. The Ospreys claimed the series after Mariah Reynolds belted her second career grand slam in the fifth inning on Mar. 24, 2013 to lift UNF to a 5-4 win.
The series begins with a doubleheader on Saturday at 1 p.m., and concludes with a single game at Noon on Sunday. Admission to all UNF softball home games is free.
