
Three Ospreys Scored Double-Digits, but #WBB Falls to USC Upstate

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – For the third-straight road game, three Ospreys scored in double-figures on the road during University of North Florida women's basketball's 79-63 loss at USC Upstate at the Hodge Center on Thursday night.

Amber Robinson, Destinee Smith and Brittney Wright each had 10 points. For Smith and Wright it is also the third consecutive away game they have each scored 10-or-more points. Paulina Zaveckaite grabbed a team-best nine rebounds.

UNF shot 37.1 percent (26-for-67) from the field.

Brittany Starling and Valese McAllister paced USC Upstate with a double-double each. Starling had a 10-point, 10-rebound double-double, while McAllister tallied 10 points and 11 rebounds. Brittany Clency led the Spartans with 16 points and seven assists.

USC Upstate shot 42.7 percent (32-for-75) and held a 45-43 advantage in rebounds.

UNF and USC Upstate battled for control at the start of the game with five ties taking place within the first eight minutes and 43 seconds of the game. The fifth tie came as Ki Conner hit a jumper at 12:17 to make it 14-14. Back-to-back Spartan treys allowed USC Upstate to break the tie, but a jumper from Robinson at 10:20 pulled UNF to within four and USC Upstate held a 20-16 lead. However, the Spartans used a 14-2 run over the next five-and-a-half minutes and USC Upstate went up 34-18 at 4:41 on a Clency jumper. The Spartans went up by as many as 18 twice before UNF was able to make it a 13-point game heading into halftime. Wright hit a jumper with 32 seconds left in the half, but USC Upstate led 42-29 at the break.

UNF battled in the opening minutes of the second half and kept it a 13-point game twice, but a layup from Starling started a 9-0 run that saw USC Upstate go up 57-35 at 13:37. The Ospreys attempted to chip away at the Spartans' lead. However, USC Upstate kept pulling away and eventually went up by 23 points with 4:45 to go when Starling made a layup. UNF went on to end the game on an 11-4 run to ultimately cut the deficit down to 16.

The Ospreys play their final road game of the regular season on Saturday at ETSU. Tip-off is set for 7 p.m., from the MSHA Athletics Center.
