Â
GAINESVILLE, Fla. – Despite a career-high 27 points from Destinee Smith, University of North Florida women's basketball could not overcome a sluggish start to the second half and fell to Florida 63-51 on Sunday afternoon at the O'Connell Center.
Â
"Des played her heart out today," said head coach Mary Tappmeyer. "She wanted that W and it showed in how she competed through the entire game."
Â
Smith's 27 points are the second-most to be scored by an Osprey in UNF's Division I era. Meanwhile, both Paulina Zaveckaite and Amber Robinson pulled down a team-best seven rebounds.
Â
UNF shot 34.8 percent (16-for-46) from the field, but committed 24 turnovers and was out-rebounded 47-36.
Â
"We knew that this game was going to be dependent on controlling the glass and handling their pressure," said Tappmeyer. "We did not respond well in either of those two areas."
Â
Four Gators scored in double figures with Haley Lorenzen pacing Florida with 14 points. Cassie Peoples added 12 points, while Brooke Copeland and Ronni Williams tallied 11 and 10 points, respectively. Both Lorenzen and Williams grabbed a team-best eight rebounds.
Â
Florida shot 33.8 percent (24-for-71) from the field and held a 47-36 rebounding advantage.
Â
UNF got two early one-point leads in the first half, taking an 8-7 advantage on two Smith free throws at 17:01. The Ospreys then held a 10-9 lead with a pair of Zaveckaite foul shots at 16:33. Florida answered with a 9-1 run and took an 18-11 lead on a Lorenzen jumper at 13:51.The Gators pushed their lead to 11 as Carla Batchelor's layup at 7:21 made it 27-16, but UNF answered with a 10-0 run to come to within one. Maiya Rumph hit a pair of free throws at 3:36 to make it 27-26. After Florida gained a six-point advantage with 49 seconds remaining in the half, a jumper of Amber Robinson at 29 seconds made it a four-point game and UNF entered halftime trailing 34-30.
Â
Florida opened the second half on a 9-2 run and the Ospreys found themselves trailing 43-32 at 12:37. Although UNF brought the Gators' lead down to eight twice, including at 10:53 on a Brittney Wright jumper, Florida went on an 11-2 run to take a 17-point, 56-39 lead at 4:59. The Gators went up by as many as 19 twice, including at the 2:43 mark on a Williams jumper that made it 61-42. However, UNF finished the game on a 9-2 run to cut the deficit down to 12.
Â
UNF returns to action on Thursday when the Ospreys host Mercer. Tip-off is set for 2 p.m., from UNF Arena.
