Â
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – For the first time in program history, University of North Florida women's basketball plays on New Year's Day as the Ospreys host Mercer on Thursday at UNF Arena. Tip-off is set for 2 p.m. It will also be the first time UNF and Mercer meet in a non-conference setting.
Â
"We're looking forward to being back home and playing in front of our fans," said head coach Mary Tappmeyer. "Mercer will be a really good challenge for us because they have one of the best scorers that we will face this year. It is going to be a battle."
Â
UNF comes off a 63-51 loss at Florida on Sunday, but Destinee Smith led all scorers with 27 points. Smith's 27 points are the second-most to be scored by an Osprey in a Division I game. As a result, Smith earned Atlantic Sun Player of the Week on Monday.
Â
Tickets are $6 for adults and $4 for Youth 17-under, Senior Citizens, Military and UNF Faculty and Staff with proper ID. Admission for UNF students with a valid Osprey1 Card and children 2-and-under are free. Tickets may be purchased online at www.UNFOspreys.com, by phone at (904) 620-BIRD (2473) or at the UNF Arena Ticket Office.
Â
Â
Home Sweet Home: UNF has enjoyed quite a bit of success on its home court. Since playing its first game at UNF Arena on Jan. 16, 1993, the Ospreys are 200-116 all-time at UNF Arena.
Â
A Couple of Streaks: Both Destinee Smith and sophomore Janeá Williams bring a pair of streaks into Thursday's game. Smith is riding an 11-game double-digit scoring streak and has averaged 16.2 points per game during that span. Williams has recorded at least one block in each of the last nine contests.
Â
Scouting Mercer: Enters Thursday with a 6-7 record… young team with four seniors and eight freshmen and no juniors or sophomores… finishes a three-game road swing at UNF on Thursday… since upsetting Alabama 46-39 on Dec. 14, has dropped its last four games, including Monday's 67-66 loss at Jacksonville State… already 0-1 against Atlantic Sun teams after falling to Kennesaw State 76-56 on Dec. 16… Precious Bridges averages a team-best 22.9 points per game… Teanna Robinson has a 7.5 rebound-per-game average and 36 blocks for the season.
Â
UNF-Mercer Series: UNF holds a slim 10-9 advantage in the all-time series, but Mercer has won the last four games.
