Â
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – University of North Florida women's basketball held off a second-half surge from Wofford in order to claim a 68-60 victory on Saturday on Day One of the Hampton Inn Oceanfront Holiday Classic at UNF Arena.
Â
"Wofford was never going to go away," said head coach Mary Tappmeyer. "Those kids battled for 40 minutes and we knew we were in for a fight."
The win marked the sixth non-conference victory of the Ospreys, which is their most non-conference regular-season wins in the program's Division I era.
Paulina Zaveckaite tallied her second double-double in as many games, recording 12 points and 12 rebounds. Destinee Smith scored a team-best 14 points, while Amber Robinson tallied a career-high tying 13 points. Smith also added seven assists, while Bailey Florin dished out six assists and had no turnovers.
Â
UNF shot 41.0 percent (25-for-61) for the game and held a 47-37 advantage in rebounds.
Â
Jordan Frazier scored a game-high 24 points for Wofford, while Kentra Washington had 10 points and 12 rebounds. Maria Corella added 11 points and was 7-for-7 from the foul line.
Â
Wofford shot 30.0 percent (18-for-60) for the game, but was 94.1 percent (16-for-17) from the free throw line.
Â
The Ospreys came out strong in the first half and quickly built a double-digit lead. Janeá Williams' layup at 12:49 put UNF up 18-7. UNF pushed its lead to 16 late in the half, taking a 34-18 advantage on a Sierra Shepherd layup at 4:47. However, Frazier powered Wofford on an 8-0 run in the final 1:52 as the Ospreys took a 34-26 advantage into halftime.
Â
UNF and Wofford traded buckets to start the second half and the Terriers came to within six on a Frazier trey at 15:32 that made it 40-34. UNF attempted to pull away and gained a pair of nine-point advantages twice, including at 12:27 when Caitlyn Spane's free throw made it 48-39. Wofford answered with a 12-5 run to cut UNF's lead down to two. Another Frazier three made it 53-51 with 9:00 to go.
Â
A Smith layup and two Williams foul shots provided the Ospreys with a six-point, 57-51 cushion at 7:31. However, a jumper from Lauren Kirby and two Corella foul shots brought it back to a two-point game. Tough defense helped keep Wofford off the scoreboard for over four minutes and UNF took advantage of that scoring drought to go up 63-55 at 1:28. Brittney Wright made a foul shot that gave UNF the eight-point advantage. Although Wofford came to within five at 1:20 on a Washington three, UNF outscored Wofford 5-2 in the final 49 seconds with all of those points for both teams coming from the foul line.
Â
The Hampton Inn Oceanfront Holiday Classic concludes on Sunday at UNF Arena. The day starts with the FIU-Wofford game at 1 p.m., and finishes with the UNF-Western Carolina game at 3:30 p.m.
