TALLAHASSEE, Fla. --Â The North Florida women's cross country team wrapped up their 2014 schedule Friday morning with an impressive 10th place finish at the NCAA South Regional meet ran on the cross country course at Apalachee Regional Park.
The Ospreys, who entered the event ranked No. 8 in the latest South Region poll, finished with a team score of 264. It was the best finish in the program's Division I history. Freshman standout Eden Meyer, a native of Jacksonville, earned All-Region honors as UNF's top finisher in 20th with a time of 20:23.30 in her first career 6K race. Meyer was also the second best finisher from the Atlantic Sun, trailing only ASun Champion Madelin Talbert from Lipscomb.
"Our women's team continues to improve each year at the Regional meet," said head coach Jeff Pigg. "We've climbed from 14th to 12th and now this season 10th. Eden Meyer did a fantastic job to finish 20th overall as a true freshman running in her first collegiate 6K. Ale had a personal best time as our second finisher while seniors Andelka Tancic and Elle Baker finished out their cross country careers with strong runs. I was really impressed with how well Eden competed at this distance. She was not intimidated running againnst the top runners from Vanderbilt, Florida State and other SEC and ACC powers. She ran with confidence just like she's done all season long and earned a great finish."
All seven UNF runners posted personal best times in the 6K. Alessandra Valdes finished 39th in 20:43.90 with Andelka Tancic 59th (21:01.80) and Elle Baker 60th (21:01.90). Senior Alyssa Brandt closed out her running career for the Ospreys finishing 90th in 21:24.90 as the final scoring runner. Juniors Lauren Gonzalez (21:40.90) and Alexis Irwin (21:47.00) rounded out the UNF lineup in 109th and 114th, respectively.
Vanderbilt captured the team title with a total of 52 points, just one point ahead of event host Florida State with 53. FSU's Colleen Quigley claimed the individual crown in a time of 19:17.00.
