Coach Tappmeyer Post-Game Interview
Â
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Four Ospreys scored in the double-figures as University of North Florida women's basketball picked up its first Atlantic Sun win of the season with a 78-66 victory over Lipscomb Saturday at UNF Arena.
Â
"After Thursday's game, the team really flipped its switch," said head coach Mary Tappmeyer. "We realize what we have to do and how we have to play."
Â
Destinee Smith, Bailey Florin and Brittney Wright all set new career-highs for points, while Raneisha Lamar got her second double-double of the season with 16 points and 12 rebounds. Smith led the Ospreys with 23 points and Florin and Wright added 15 and 13 points, respectively. Larkira Jones also grabbed a team-high 13 rebounds and had two blocks.
Â
UNF shot 42.9 percent for the game, going 24-for-56. The Ospreys also held a 42-36 advantage in rebounds.
Â
Danay Fothergill scored a game-high 27 points for Lipscomb. Sara Bliss tallied 16 points, while Ashley Southern added a 16-point, 12-rebound double-double.
Â
The Lady Bisons shot 39.7 percent (25-for-63) from the floor.
Â
In the first half, UNF took a seven-point lead at 7:56 on a Smith jumper that made it 21-14. Lipscomb chipped away at the Ospreys' lead and used a 12- 4 run to take a 26-25 lead at 3:24 on a Southern jumper. UNF finished the half on an 11-2 run to take a 36-28 lead at halftime. The last three field goals that the Ospreys made were all three-pointers with Wright, Smith and Florin each knocking back a trey. Florin's came as time expired in the half, giving the Ospreys the eight-point advantage at the break.
Â
UNF did not relinquish its lead at all during the second half. The closest Lipscomb came was four points on a Southern layup at 14:21 that made it 38-34. The Ospreys responded with a commanding 16-6 run with a layup from Chandler Merkerson putting them up 54-40 with 8:40 to go.
Â
Although Lipscomb trimmed UNF's lead down to 10 on several occasions, the Ospreys went up 64-52 on a layup from Lamar at 3:57. That would be the Ospreys final field goal of the game as the remaining 14 points came from the foul line. UNF went 14-for-19 (73.7 percent) from the foul line in the final 3:57.
Â
UNF is back in action on Thursday night at Stetson. Tip is set for 7 p.m., at the Edmunds Center.
